Yeah turning auto-set solved the issue. It’s a crappy feature anyway so I don’t use any of the auto-set or two counting in the strength activity anyway.

Be sure that Settings > Tracking > Extended Tracking is off. IIRC, extended tracking does not behave exactly the way you describe. But worth checking.
