what's going on with my tracking??

hey all,

I've had this Inreach Explorer+ for a couple of years now, usually on the expedition plan, and have used it to track my progress sailing long passages at sea - see https://share.garmin.com/farotherside

at some point in the past few months, something has changed, and now my device apparently only sends tracking points when the screen is turned on or accessed! I don't understand.

I've checked all the settings a hundred times and can't find anything that would suggest this behaviour - I set it to (for example) "logging" tracks at 2 mins, and "sending" tracks at 5 mins. then I will put the device into the USB charging cradle thingy mounted to my binnacle, outdoors with a clear view of the sky, and wait. in thirty minutes, I go and hit any button on the Inreach, the screen lights up and I see the 'triangle' icon at the top showing an empty triangle with a flashing question mark, then the triangle becomes solid/filled, and the up/down icon flashes next to it. the tracking screen says "1 point sent". if I continue using the device for five or more minutes, it will send another point.

however, if I walk away and the screen turns off, and an hour later I return and hit a button, the same thing happens. the triangle arrow icon is empty with a question mark, then it fills and shows the up and down arrow, and then the tracking screen says "3 points sent". I have it set to 5 minute sends, and I'm actively sailing at the time, there should be *twelve* points sent!

please see my recent sail from Catalina Escarpment to San Diego on my share.garmin.com/farotherside page as an example. I was testing constantly trying every setting I could find, but nothing seemed to change matters at all. this device *used* to work perfectly - if you set the filter on the share page to 'all tracks' you can see a lot more tracking, where it would send track points every five minutes for literally weeks at a time.

I have tried holding down the X and the power button until the device reboots, multiple times now, and that seemed to make it quicker to get a GPS lock, but did not affect the "tracking points sending only when the screen is on" behaviour...

what's going on??

thanks in advance.

  • Be sure that Settings > Tracking > Extended Tracking is off. IIRC, extended tracking does not behave exactly the way you describe. But worth checking.

If the unit was powered off for more than a few days, or if you moved it more than a few hundred miles since the last time you used it (with it off), might be that the almanac is out of date - resulting in a long time to first fix. See the end of the post for info on acquiring an up to date almanac.

Sounds like the device is not acquiring/holding a GPS lock. With logging at 2 minutes and sending at 5 minutes, it's turning off the GPS radio between points. Which means it needs to reacquire each time.

You've done a soft reset. I'm going to suggest a bigger hammer. Try a hard reset as explained here:

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=tBTeMiOoNn7gBGDP0mqmi7

It sounds like the unit is functioning well enough to do the factory reset via the menus. Settings > Recovery Options > Restore Factory Settings

If not, the article has the magic button sequence. Note that this erases ALL user data on the device. It also requires you to repeat the outdoor portion of the activation.

I do not think that the legacy devices use an EPO file. Your use case is such that I would not expect the almanac data on the unit to be out of date. After the factory reset, you will want to soak the unit (powered up, with a clear view of the sky) for 20 minutes or so. That guarantees that the on-board almanac will be up to date. Without a good almanac, cold start will require a full sky search. Which takes a while.

If none of that helps, might want to open a support ticket. Could be a hardware problem.
