I've given up and added communication via makeWebRequest() (to localhost) to my app as a fallback. This needs to run a webserver on the phone. However I hate so much that I had to do this, results are surprisingly good.

You better continue there.
First you must have software version 6.20 and then in de Connect app click on your watch icon on the top and choose activities and applications. It should be somewhere at the bottom. Click on it to install it.
