Bug Report: Backlight issue (Garmin Chris)

Backlight comes on with gesture with ALL backlight options set to off (Please no comments on wrong settings, have used plenty of Garmin watches including the Instinct)

I think it may be limited to after sunset to sunrise only? Annoying.

  • Hmmm. What you just described is likely why I cannot replicate the issue on my own Instinct 2. I have my Gesture set to Off in all Backlight settings and I cannot get my backlight to turn on with the way yourself and others have described in this thread.

However, since the issue has now happened on your 2nd new Instinct 2 watch, the issue points more likely to a software bug vs. hardware. I am going to test further and will respond to your PM you sent me.

    Thank you for the update!

  • I get what you are saying. Do not disturb deactivates the backlight during set hours and when manually activated. However, this is a work around for the problem that exists as you will not receive your notifications either. I want notifications with the auto light (gesture) disabled. Still no solutions. Im on my second Instinct 2 solar, which has the same issue with gesture not turning off when set to off.

  • Chris, cup your hand around your watch face or go in the dark and set your gesture feature off on all the settings. The ambient light may be overpowering the backlight on your watch making it appear like the backlight is not coming on. I suggest just going into a dark room with no lighting. I find it odd that I swapped my Instinct 2 solar and it exhibits the same issue everyone else on this forum seems to be experiencing.

  • You’re welcome. I’m pretty confident it is likely a software bug. Everything else on the Watch works correctly as far as I’m aware of. Thanks for your help Chris!

  • Yes, it is set off on both activity and general use.

  • Well Chris,

I’m having the exact opposite issue now. Gesture is set to on under active/general profiles and the backlight does not come on at all with a gesture ThinkingShrug

  • Thank you Chris,

I already know where the problem is, it's the During sleep backlight setting. I also make night shifts and my sleep is set from 9 pm to 1 pm the next day.
I would welcome the option of permanently turning off the backlight in During sleep mode. The basic question is, who needs backlight during sleep?
  • Hello,

    Instinct 2 Solar v6.16.

Under Setting/Backlight & General/Activity there is present the submenu Gesture which is not under Sleep.

So, it is a software issue meaning the submenu Gesture need to be added under Sleep as is under General & Activity.

All the rest are working with no issue.

    BR

  • Updated June 27th, 2022:

The issue has been resolved with software v8.64.

  • I figured out the problem for my watch. The Sleep profile was set up incorrectly on the watch. The time was set from 10 AM one morning until 7 AM the following morning. The Sleep profile was overriding all the other backlight settings for the watch.
