fenix 8 hr sensor cracking

Good day,

I purchased a fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm in mid-July of this year (2025). This is my 4th garmin watch and I've never had issues before, however this time around I started noticing erratic HR readings and a rapidly declining battery during a half-marathon (battery usually lasts 20 days + but in this case it went from 100% to 25% in hours). I eventually took it off and discovered cracking in the HR sensor glass - 3 days after discovering this issue I noticed the glass cracked further and when I put it back on the HR sensor stopped working entirely - it's almost like there's some source of pressure on the watch, possibly from a manufacturing defect of some sort?

Either way - Garmin in my country states they don't repair products, they replace it at a discounted rate.

Is this a common occurance? Could it be because the watch is too big (it's 51mm) and knocking against my wrist bone? I'm a bit panicky since I get a generic automated response from garmin saying "user damage".

  • I said "Anything useful would be highly appreciated" in my post, so I'm curious as to why you decided to give me the most useless comment you could think of.

    You still did not…

  • Nope, that's still part of the resin, metal sustained nothing. You know why? Because there was no impact.

Resin?  What resin?  The HR sensor is glass, and the surround is stainless steel…

  • Sorry to say but this don't look like self cracking. Maybe you placed watch on table and something hard was under it and pressed to the glass of sensor and it broke ?

  • Hi Bartek,

Absolutely correct - I often use my smart watches to crack nuts on the table, I was told it's an endurance watch and cracking nuts is an endurance sport after all.

I'll be more careful next time.

  • Maybe it is wise to make independent paid test? If watch was broken not from your fault, you will have compensation

  • Is this a common occurance?

Definitely not. To me it looks like an impact too. Whether the impact was there before you bought the watch, or not, is hard to tell, but to be honest I am rather surprised by the state of your watch. Did you buy it new? How long do you own it? I have several Garmin watches, some of them are many years old, and I cannot really tell I am careful with them, using them 24/7 not only during all kind of outdoor activities, even when doing construction works, and none of them look as beaten up as yours. I am especially surprised how bad your watch looks from the inner side that you have shown, since that side is normally pretty well protected.

  • I've taken the watch off only twice in the 2.5 months since I've purchased it. Both times to charge it, which I obviously have to do upside down as the pins are at the bottom - I don't think the bottom of the watch has even touched a table.

I work in in an airconditioned office and I wear the watch 24/7, including when I sleep and shower. I've also noticed the condition of the watch deteriorating while my Forerunner 935 that I bought 8 years ago looks like I bought it a week ago.

I have bought 7 watches over the years and I've NEVER encountered this.

What really puzzles me is why people would come here to tell me it's impact - it adds no value or assistance to the post and practically means "you're either stupid or lying". It never saw impact, the most pressure it experienced was perhaps being slept on when I'm on my side at night.

Now imagine for a moment that I'm not lying or stupid, and that this watch, perhaps this particular one, is defective or from a bad batch - what would I need to do to get it replaced by Garmin - what are my next steps?

Anything useful would be highly appreciated.

  • Did you buy it brand new, sealed? It has clear marks of impacts. Before 8 pro I have used (or rather abused) my 2y old Epix Pro (which is identical on the back) on the construction site and it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as this.

I'm 100% sure any warranty claim is going to be rejected cause of these impact marks.

  • Well that's settled then, the white spots (that wipe off with a cloth) is impact marks all of a sudden. You caught me out. I actually rammed the watch against the wall as hard as I can because I love wasting all my savings I spent on an expensive watch.

I can't wait for the next 5 people to tell me how there's impact. This forum is incredibly useful.

In that case it looks to me that you've bought (perhaps unintentionally) a second hand watch, since I cannot imagine a watch to be in such a bad state on the bottom side while wearing it permanently for just 2½ months, without exposing to any harsh conditions. Did you try placing the reclamation at the vendor? Or did you buy it directly from Garmin?

  • You don’t use a DEET based repellent do you?

Ive had one damaged from the chemical on my wrist (was a Suunto though, but could be a possibility)

  • You don’t use a DEET based repellent do you?

Could be perhaps an issue with the resin covers of some watches, but not with the glass cover on Fenix 8.
