fenix 8 hr sensor cracking

Good day,

I purchased a fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm in mid-July of this year (2025). This is my 4th garmin watch and I've never had issues before, however this time around I started noticing erratic HR readings and a rapidly declining battery during a half-marathon (battery usually lasts 20 days + but in this case it went from 100% to 25% in hours). I eventually took it off and discovered cracking in the HR sensor glass - 3 days after discovering this issue I noticed the glass cracked further and when I put it back on the HR sensor stopped working entirely - it's almost like there's some source of pressure on the watch, possibly from a manufacturing defect of some sort?

Either way - Garmin in my country states they don't repair products, they replace it at a discounted rate.

Is this a common occurance? Could it be because the watch is too big (it's 51mm) and knocking against my wrist bone? I'm a bit panicky since I get a generic automated response from garmin saying "user damage".

Definitely not. To me it looks like an impact too. Whether the impact was there before you bought the watch, or not, is hard to tell, but to be honest I am rather…

  • I said "Anything useful would be highly appreciated" in my post, so I'm curious as to why you decided to give me the most useless comment you could think of.

    You still did not…

  • Nope, that's still part of the resin, metal sustained nothing. You know why? Because there was no impact.

Resin?  What resin?  The HR sensor is glass, and the surround is stainless steel…

  • Do you have children? Maybe one of them dropped them on the floor while you were taking a shower...

Implosione? Dubito fortemente.

You still did not explain why the watch and the strap show so much damage all over the bottom side, while it is just 2½ month old. Adding the look of the glass damage, do not be surprised that not only Garmin, but also fellow users can't believe there was no impact, and we cannot advise you how to persuade Garmin you are right.

On my mind, if you are sure that the watch did not suffer any harsh dealing while you owned it, then something had to happen to it before you purchased it (and then it is your bad luck you did not notice it on arrival).

Did you buy the watch from a well established dealer? If so, then my best advice is to place the reclaim with them. Another advice is to involve your insurance. Check with your bank, with your insurer, or with the CC company - they may be able to help you to cover the damage.

  • There's no damage on the bottom side, you're jumping to senseless conclusions - all the marks you saw are sweat or stain marks from soap and wipes right off with a cloth. This is why it's better to ask questions than to run away with your imagination.

Managed to prove to Garmin that there was no impact as the watch was literally bulging, showing some kind of tention in the build quality which caused the back to shatter.

This is why forums on the internet should be avoided, nobody, not a single person made a single useful comment, everyone kept asking me if I didn't "forgot that I broke it".

Case closed, hope you learn from this.

I did the very same thing to my watch - accidentally dropped it from about chest height and did the same damage. Even had similar damage to the metallic edge of the sensor lip like yours had. Garmin clearly have landed on the same side as everyone else in forum, but it sounds like you've been able to exert enough pressure on them to replace it anyway, so... congrats?

Uhhuh. I think you mean "Not a single person agreed with me and I find this very upsetting. I thought this would have played out differently". Well, it didn't - such is the nature of public opinion. Some people are going to have different experiences. If that offends, then its strong recommendation to stay off forums.

  • You're projecting your own fragile emotional response to people disagreeing with you onto me, so you can get off your high horse there Dr. Phil.

If I make a post saying "this watch didn't experience impact, how can I prove this to Garmin" and people respond with "It was impact", of course I hoped it would play out differently, ie. getting responses based off of the assumption that I have a genuine niche issue I need assistance with. Saying I'm wrong and it's impact serves no purpose.

People were telling me the watch has damage, when it's a goddamn soap spot that wipes off - shows you how intellectually stunted people are when they make claims with limited information.

Either way - Garmin replaced it, turned out it was a manufacturing defect after all.

  • this watch didn't experience impact, how can I prove this to Garmin

Because we can see that it has. The evidence is right there in the photos. We're just going to disagree on this one unfortunately. All the best.

  • Bulging indicates issues with battery/charging. Now question is, was only the battery you've had at fault, or is there also an issue with thermal management when charging from very low charge to full (overheating).

BTW - don't be surprised so many people thought there was an impact as that's exactly what it looked like. Better images/angles, clean watch and mention about bulging would likely prevent this. Don't expect others to read your mind/look through your eyes.
