Garmin is digging their own grave

This will be my last Garmin product.

The Fenix 8 is the current flagship device for Garmin.  Since its release, it has been plagued with bugs. Getting close to a year in and the software is still hit or miss.  Then the brightness issue in low ambient light became a pressing concern for Fenix 8 users.  Instead of Garmin providing some kind...any kind of meaningful customer service, we were initially told it would be corrected in a software update. Months later, we were then told this issue is "by design" and basically closed the door of hope to ever get a fix for this.  Now Garmin releases a subscription service and is already threatening to tie additional features behind the paywall, ignoring the fact that their customers already spent a small fortune purchasing one of their products.

If Garmin makes any current included features blocked behind a paywall in the future, a class action suit will be filed.

The direction this company has taken lately is baffling and I wonder if the suits even realize how much bad sentiment they are creating and the business they are losing.

Garmin, I've spent over $2000 in the last 1.5 years on your products.  Hope you invest it well as you'll never see another dime from me.  There are plenty of alternatives after I sell this Fenix 8 to recoup some of the money I feel I wasted on what was supposed to be a flagship device. What good is a watch if I struggle to see the display half the time?

I can't wait to be completely done with Garmin. I'll never look back, that's for sure

  • Garmin has not threatened to put any new features for the Fenix 8 behind the paywall. They have said certain new features for Garmin Connect will be included in Garmin Connect +. Honestly, given the current features in Garmin Connect, I don't see any benefit for the vast majority of users to upgrade to Garmin Connect +.

I understand your frustration but, using words such as threaten and class action lawsuit doesn't serve any useful purpose.

The ambient light is an issue with the amoled version but, I see where others are having success with watch faces other than Garmin's. Have you tried any of those?

I have been using my Fenix 8 solar for several months now and have not experienced any issues with the watch and I get close to advertised battery life.

You are unhappy with Garmin and ready to move on which I applaud for excising your right to choose which fitness device is best for you. I wish you will with whatever device you choose.

  • Yes, I'm using full golf features with Garmin Golf app, not the paid subscription. Virtual caddy gives me suggested club selection.  It's giving me enough information for my shot.  One more thing, I always check and update the maps using Garmin Express.

  • I've used Garmin watches for 10 years, and I've had minimal issues and none that ever made me want to post a rant like the above.

  • I’m a shill because I said for you to just stop now, as opposed to coming to a forum to complain? You’re just looking for attention, which is why you did it, because people that are truly fed up we just say I’m done altogether and walk away.

I’ve had the watch since release and while it’s not perfect, they’ve improved quite a bit on it (since its release) and for my needs, I’m happy. I’m not saying everybody else has to have the same opinion but it looks incredibly stupid when people come on here say that they’re done with the company but continue to come back here and post and then continue to respond to others.

Stop seeking attention and just cut the cord altogether.

  • Thank you, Paul. I did update everything with Garmin Express; the following round was flawless. Then the 13.37 bundle came along and again 2 to 3 reboots per round. The frustrating part is that the score is saved but all the shot map is lost along with the stats. Thank you for your reply, will continue to test.

  • The launch firmware for the F8 gave me connectivity issues with broadcasting my HR to the Edge 840. It took several minutes for the watch and head unit to sync. Garmin must of fixed that bug because I've had zero issues on that front after a few months of updates - works great now. Out of all of my watches from this company the Fenix 8 has to be the model I've been least excited about - looking back it was a minor upgrade with the new features/OS  from my Epix 2. I typically don't jump to new release models right away so it was a lesson learned on my part.

Garmin is shifting their business model with the paywalls because there are actually people that will pay for the services. I feel like many users will turn to other competitors on the market. I've been keeping tabs on all the other brands and I do like what I'm seeing out there. I've been exclusively wearing Garmin watches since 2016 - people like myself and other long time users are the people you want to stick around for the long haul.  Personally, I think they've gone overboard with charging for their designs on the ConnectIQ app. I purchased one a few months ago and it doesn't work well. Not a good look by Garmin's development team.

  • Wow, F8 on sale already, the pro must be on the way :D

  • I honestly think they'll still fix this, at some point, but I guess that's a wait-see.  In the meantime, I run my F8 AMOLED at the 2/3 level (it dims much less at this level), and it's readable at night, for my older eyes, barely.  A lot depends on the screen content in this regard, if it's mostly a bunch of small font text, dimmed way down, it's tough, I admit. Discrete adjustments would fix this, so I wouldn't expect this to be a technically tough fix (s/w engineer here, mostly retired), they could just roll it into the brightness settings or add a Focus mode, either would work very cleanly.

Other than that, I think the F8 is perhaps the best fitness watch I've had, by a pretty wide margin. Battery life is fantastic, most metrics are very consistent, connectivity is very reliable, etc.  My only real frustration (other than also wishing it had a discrete night/dimming control), is being able to turn off the swipe-left for music controls during an activity.  I'm left-handed and a road-cyclist, so I'm often wanting to move a jacket or other sleeve out of the way, to check metrics during a ride (or walk on off-days, whatever), and the swipe right->left on the face by moving my sleeve often kicks me into the music controls, which are NOT disable-able (I chatted with a CS rep who actually seemed surprised by this, filed a request on their side and had me file a suggestion on mine, too).

I sure wouldn't go back to my 955, and I don't know what other manufacturer makes a better setup, at this point, honestly.

  • Question for you, do you use custom power modes to control the display, like turn it off for walks, but keep it AOD for runs/bikes via Focus mode (even when using gesture for general use)? I find it doesn't work for the F8 Amoled or Tactix 8, but does for the F8 Solar.

Trying to figure out if I'm unlucky or just expecting too much.
