Pics and Emojis

I can't see any emojis nore Pictures sent via Whatsapp on my Fenix 8 solar. Firmware 12.22 is installed

  • I have solved the problem and hope that Garmin will address this issue in the future.

In order for emojis to be displayed, the Fenix requires files that replace Unicode characters with images. (e.g. U+1F642 = Slight smile ) If there is no image for a Unicode emoji, a question mark is displayed.

The solution: Connect the Fenix 8 to a PC with Garmin Express and update if necessary.
I had driver problems with the first PC. Garmin Express briefly recognized the watch and checked for updates, but could not update anything in the short time the device was recognized. The updates also included two files for emojis. The connection then generally worked on a second PC. This emoji update was then installed there automatically and without any notification! Normally you will not notice when Garmin Express loads the missing data.

As a customer, I expect that any missing data will be downloaded during the over-the-air update of Fenix (or with Garmin Connect) or already bundled directly in a firmware update.

  • In Garmin Connect, you can only select in “More” - “Settings” - “Notifications” from which apps the push messages should be forwarded. In general, Garmin Connect only picks up the notifications from the smartphone for the relevant apps and forwards them. At least I am not aware that Garmin Connect can explicitly filter the messages. (e.g. only display messages if the desired contact name appears in the message) Would at least be a very nice feature.

Now that you point that out, I actually connected the watch to a PC with Garmin Express. Probably that's what fixed the emoji issue, but I didn't realize it at the time. Good to know for the future!

  • I moved from 7 to 8, and now WhatsApp pictures don't come with the relevant notification; only text. If I open my smartphone, I see the picture. It's a step back...
