Garmin Fenix 8 Amoled 51mm problems

I must admit that so far, I am disappointed with the purchase of the Fenix 8. I had all the previous Fenix models except for the 5, and I honestly thought that upgrading from the Elevate gen4 to gen5 in the Fenix 8 would be significantly more accurate. There are still major issues with sleep tracking. The Fenix 7X used to show that I was still sleeping even when I was already awake and sitting in bed. I’ve had the Fenix 8 for four days now, and last night I couldn’t fall asleep until 1:00 AM, frequently tossing and turning, yet the Fenix 8 showed that I fell asleep at 23:31... It's slightly better than the Fenix 7X, but the difference is minor, and it’s still really bad. Not to mention that I woke up at 5:57 and didn’t fall back asleep, but the watch showed the end of sleep after I had already started working on it, at exactly 6:46... I had hoped this would be addressed.

Another major issue is while I was riding my road bike for 50 minutes, the Fenix 8 counted 600 steps... I’ll add that for most of the ride, I kept my hands on the handlebars. I hope Garmin addresses these problems, and I am eagerly waiting for an update every day.

Best regards

  • I doubt whether sleep is ever measured correctly, whether it is on Garmin, Apple or Samsung watch, I would just take it with a grain of salt. I also sleep with the Sleep Cycle app and a box under my chest and my sleep never matches what the box reads. As Curiousconstruction just pointed out, it all has to do with the movements of your wrist when you're in bed. As soon as you turn around, the watch probably registers that you are awake and probably counts footsteps.. lol..

  • The heart rate sensor in the Fenix 8 is AMAZING for me. The battery life is also perfect—I'm shocked because my Fenix 7X MIP seems to have had worse battery performance. The heart rate sensor is a huge improvement over the 7X. With the 7X, I would be running fast, but it would take 15 seconds to register the elevated heart rate. Here, everything is instant. Not to mention, the 7X often refused to display higher heart rate values at all. So, as you can see, the Fenix 8 has some significant advantages as well.

  • I have had no sleep tracking now for a week.

I am not sure if a week ago there was an update that caused this, or what happened.

I can understand bugs with new hardware and new software, but something like this should not happen with a $1K watch

  • I would like to add that the step counting issue occurs when the bike ride is started not through the watch but through the Garmin 830 Edge computer. When I start the activity via the watch, it does not count steps and works correctly. The same issue happens when driving a car — during a two-hour drive, it counted almost 300 steps...

  • Me too. Then I just bought my girlfriend a Forerunner 965 and her screen looks amazing. Where’s the update Garmin?

  • Have you been living underneath a rock? They’ve definitely addressed quite a few of the launch problems while adding quite a few other goodies. In fact, they just released another update today. So you got your wish Wink

  •  You have to keep in mind that it is a wristwatch not a medical device. Don’t get caught up in measuring things day to day, look at your trends.
