Garmin Fenix 8 Amoled 51mm problems

I must admit that so far, I am disappointed with the purchase of the Fenix 8. I had all the previous Fenix models except for the 5, and I honestly thought that upgrading from the Elevate gen4 to gen5 in the Fenix 8 would be significantly more accurate. There are still major issues with sleep tracking. The Fenix 7X used to show that I was still sleeping even when I was already awake and sitting in bed. I’ve had the Fenix 8 for four days now, and last night I couldn’t fall asleep until 1:00 AM, frequently tossing and turning, yet the Fenix 8 showed that I fell asleep at 23:31... It's slightly better than the Fenix 7X, but the difference is minor, and it’s still really bad. Not to mention that I woke up at 5:57 and didn’t fall back asleep, but the watch showed the end of sleep after I had already started working on it, at exactly 6:46... I had hoped this would be addressed.

Another major issue is while I was riding my road bike for 50 minutes, the Fenix 8 counted 600 steps... I’ll add that for most of the ride, I kept my hands on the handlebars. I hope Garmin addresses these problems, and I am eagerly waiting for an update every day.

Best regards

  • and update is coming end of September, early October.

the information was shared by Garmin in the Naps issue/bug thread/topic.

  • For me the elevate 5 is significantly more accurate than my my old Fenix 7x in recording HR when compared to a chest strap (running) its spot on 95% of the time and when its off its only 1-2 Beats. Dont feel any difference in sleep tracking

  • Indeed, the heart rate is measured noticeably better, and there are many positives – I was also pleasantly surprised by the battery life, which is really good. The sensor, as I mentioned, is better, although yesterday while on the trainer, I tried to push almost to my maximum, but it was hard to reach 174 bpm on the watch, whereas on a chest strap, it would definitely be well above 180, considering my max heart rate is 210.

Another error occurred today during sleep – it counted 19 steps, which isn't much, but still. Another night and again, sleep was measured incorrectly, just like on the Fenix 7X – I woke up around 7 am, and the watch kept tracking sleep until 7:37 when I manually stopped the recording. I really hope this improves – another generation and the same issue with accurate sleep tracking. I’m looking forward to a quick update.

  • It turns out that when I start a cycling activity from the watch, there's no problem with counting steps. However, if I start the activity from the Garmin Edge bike computer, the watch begins to count steps during the ride. This is an important hint for Garmin.

The heart rate sensor is much better than in the Fenix 7X—it measured beautifully from the wrist during an outdoor cycling session. I believe the issue with the heart rate reading during yesterday's indoor trainer session might have been due to a sweaty wrist. Today, the heart rate measurement outside was almost perfect.

  • There are many bugs in the Fenix8.. Screen brightness in low light conditions makes my Felix 8 51 Amoled completely UNUSABLE!!! Also the watch lags even in the watch face menu.. it’s a horrible experience, never had these issues with my Fenix7X or my EPIXPRO 51!!

  • Does anyone has random reboots? I have so far 3-4 random reboots, two of them when I was trying to access notifications (slide down from main screen) and one when tried to start a running activity (pressed on suggestion then rebooted)

  • Yes exact the same issues...

  • I still have issues with sleep tracking – today I woke up at 5 a.m. and tried really hard to fall asleep again but couldn’t. Of course, the watch kept tracking sleep until I turned it off at 6:45 a.m.

  • Its just based on wrist movement primarily with some weighting on HR and heavy weighting on when you've told it you normally sleep unfortunately.  I've found if I'm awake and laying somewhat motionless it has no idea that I'm awake or asleep if it's between my sleep hours.  If I go vertical then it knows I'm awake because not a lot of people sleep vertically.

  • Are you saying if you don't start a cycle activity on the watch then it treats your leg motions as steps?  That seems like it would be as expected.  The watch only knows it's not in an activity but your legs keep moving like you're walking.

But if you're starting a cycle activity on the computer and that then automatically triggers a cycle activity on the watch but still keeps counting your leg motions as steps, that definitely would be a bug.
