Fenix 8 navigation bug :Disable Bottom Black field not possible

Hi I used Fenix 7 before, I can't find anymore how to disable this big black box or data field on the bottom. The usual function on fenix 7 to disable data field or change map layout doesn't change this field. It pops up as soon a I navigate and this is really annoying having on fifth of the screen taken by one black field...some advices?

  • Thanks Eggi. Have not tried fit file. I use this watch for hiking in forests and mountains. Often off track. Turn by turn navigation is of no use to me. But for some long tracks with multiple climbs it is useful to see how far up a climb you are with the diagram. Also having the watch alert when you have strayed off line.

  • TNT3333, I came from 6x pro with same screen size. Being able to see further ahead on map is one reason to have the big screen. If the older generation watch has the ability to turn this data field off then it should not be hard to make this generation the same. Unless it is entirely new code for navigating. Or old code. The navigation feels more like the original rectangular screened Epix.
however, one big Plus for me is ability to show multiple tracks on the map at once. Very useful on a hand held. So when you are starting an activity and you go through saved courses. Then select a course and turn on “show on map”.

Useful for me as you can plan a route and also have some alternatives on the map.

  • Navigation on the Fenix 8 remains terrible. No idea why Garmin continues not to address these concerns.

  • bugs, lags, fenix 8 is wonderful

  • Agree! @GARMIN, let us disable this stupid big black field.

  • yes, is too big.   so  all relative with navigation, maps, tracks is poor in this fenix 8

  • hey TNT33333. I tried your workaround yesterday on a long hike. It actually works pretty well. I usually have touch screen disabled* but tried it out. When you hit the screen the black section does, indeed, disappear and the arrow remains in the centre. However if you touch the screen you can move the map and arrow down to see what's ahead. In fact you can move it all around the place. So "yes", a pretty good workaround. Thank you. (Though I'd still want the option to remove).

*Regarding the touch screen. I have not looked at using it yet. I will do, but not quite ready to trust it. The original Epix (Rectangular screen) had a touch screen. However it did not work well when wet. (Well not my watch anyway). Plus it would not remain switched off. So if it rained while you were hiking the watch would switch the touch screen on, then it would take the rain as multiple touches and the software would eventually hang. My workaround was to pull the back off the watch and physically unplug the touch screen. Garmin DID eventually fix this so that the touch screen did not enable by itself. Actually the original Epix was pretty good. Much better than the fenix 5 for navigating a hike. But the 6x Pro was pretty good and overall I am pretty happy with the Enduro 3. (Assuming the bugs get sorted)

  • Having said all that. Using the touch screen etc as a workaround is still a faff.  And takes a while. Better if you can just look at the screen and see what you need without intervention.
    garmin. Please fix this.

  • Hi RosscoP

With the touch screen you can set it in the activity settings to be touch for map only. This is how I had my F7 pro. In the F8 you can also set a screen lock as well as touch for map only.
This is safer but a little more faff,  and I agree it would be better to have the option to have a full screen without arrows.

  • Latest beta announcement: "Improved Sizing of Directional Arrows on the Map."

I hope this is related to this topic;)
