How to use 3rd party maps and Custom Maps?

1. How to on/off maps? I loaded few of them but see onyl TOPO Europ Citi Navigator, and Base map.

2. How I can  use Custom Maps, like scaned maps in KMZ, which works great on Epix Gen 2.

  • What? no more Citi Navigator layer after firmware upgrade? Then I do not want to "upgrade"

  • i have the same question and problem , in F6 also F7 i  just copied IMG ( map) file to GARMIN folder and selected preferred map. now with F8x I'm not able select any map at all!! this is very disappointing we have open free map community and local maps with excellent routes and precise details . now I'm not longer able use them :( frustrating . Garmin please advise

  • Do I understand this thread correctly that it is no longer possible to use maps like MapRando on the Garmin Fenix 8?

  • You can use them just fine, however the issue is that you currently can't enable/disable individual maps (as you can on the Fenix 7, Epix Gen 2 and earlier models). This is really only an issue if you have multiple third party maps for the same country/region as they will ALL display at the same time (layering over each other).

  • Thank you for the clarification. I have understood the comments in this thread that the option to enable/disable individual maps is still present but does not work as intended. In other words: that sounds like a bug rather than Garmin intentionally removing or limiting support for third party maps. Did I understand that correctly?

  • No, Garmin have removed the ability (the menu and functionality) to enable/disable individual maps on the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 models; this is regardless of if they are Garmin's own maps or third party maps. This functionality was on the previous models. This is a major oversight/bug and this functionality is one of the main reasons that customers buy Garmin devices.

  • I am still not sure what exactly is missing on the Garmin 8.

I just looked into the menus of my Fenix 6. When I configure the map, there are options to enable or disable different types of map. In my case, there is (slightly simplified):

    • Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR
    • Topoactive Europe Central
    • SkiView
    • MapRando Germany
    • MapRando Austria

Each of these entries can be enabled or disabled. In my case, I have disabled the Garmin Topoactive Europe maps and enabled the MapRando maps. As a consequence, the watch shows OpenStreetmap maps.

It sounds like that option to enable and disable these individual entries (i.e. maps) is currently not available.

But how can I then use MapRando maps on the Fenix 8? Wouldn't a Topoactive map from Garmin always take precedence if there is no menu to disable it? It is my understanding that the Topoactive maps cover the same area as the corresponding MapRando map. The MapRando maps would not conflict as their coverage does not overlap.

I don't understand your statement that I can use 3rd party maps just fine in that context. It sound to me that this would not be possible.

Sorry for being so persistent about this but that feature is the major go/no-go decision for me.

  • Hi, as far as I know there was the ability to switch on/off any maps/layers you wanted with the base FW,. Unfortunately after 11.59 this option disappeared.

I hope Garmin will give it back and this is only a bug. For example every recent mapping modell has this feature. My brand new edge 1050 has this function too.

  • Yes, as I stated before, this ability to enable/disable maps is on the earlier models (Fenix 5x, Fenix 5 Plus series, Fenix 6 Pro and Sapphire models, Fenx 7 series, Epix Gen 2 series, Enduro 2, MARQ, Quatix 7, Tactix 7, etc. BUT it is missing from the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 models.

You can still use third party maps (such as mine or MapRando) via setting the Map Layer to CityNavigator on the Fenix 8/Enduro 3 models.

  • No CityNavigator Layer on F8 from FW11.60.
