Too low brightness in low ambient light.

Hi,

Just received my Fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm and sadly noticed its new feature, which significantly decrease the brightness in low ambient light. Not to be confused, I do not mean the configurable timeout (4, 8 or 16 sec) or focus or red shift either.

Imagine I am in a dark room. Brightness is set to maximum, battery saver is off, gesture is on. When I raise my arm, the screen comes up, but it is too dark. If I illuminate the watch display by a flashlight, the brightness goes up automatically. When I switch off the flashlight and keep the display busy, the brightness goes down again after a few seconds.

In this dark mode I hardly see the display, and can not see the small letters/numbers at all. I had no this issue with EPIX, of which brightness was independent form the ambient light.

Unfortunately I did not find any settings to get rid of this kind of dimming.

Any thoughts?

  • I experience it exactly the same. The data on the screen is almost impossible to read in the dark. A kind of adaptive brightness is switched on as soon as this watch enters the dark, which reduces the light to 50% light. And as soon as I shine the light from my phone on it, the screen glows 100%

    Our engineers are looking into concerns of the display becoming too dark in low light conditions. If you are experiencing this concern, they would love to collect some good photos showing the display appearance in different light conditions. Please feel free to reach out to me via Private Message, so we can collect some details regarding this issue. 

  • It is really hard to get pictures of the difference between daytime light conditions and night conditions, any phone will automatically adjust the picture brightness based on ambient light. Tonight I will put the Fenix 8 side by side with my 965, that should show the difference.

  • Isn't it obvious that the light on the Amoled is too dark in dark environments? If I, Piet, Klaas, Henk and Ingrid can see it, then the engineers must be able to see it too, right? The sensor can detect light during the day, causing the screen to light up, but in the dark the sensor cannot detect light so it cannot light up the screen. It cannot be explained more clearly.

  • Agreed, if everyone that has the watch is noticing this issue, it should be apparent to the engineers

    When testing the display visibility, they were not able to reproduce this experience. In all light conditions the watch was visible. However if you are seeing a different experience, this is where we would like to see the results from your watches. 

  • Then it is strange that dozens of people see it here on this forum, but a few engineers do not. It is really hard to get pictures of the difference between daytime light conditions and night conditions, any phone will automatically adjust the picture brightness based on ambient light. I would like to get in touch with these engineers who claim that everything else is fine because they have tested it. I now use the EASY ROUND watch face with a completely black background with all data in yellow, so the visibility in the dark is reasonable but not very good. If I use the watch faces that Garmin supplies as standard, I can no longer read the data in the dark because the screen is set too dark.
