Too low brightness in low ambient light.

Hi,

Just received my Fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm and sadly noticed its new feature, which significantly decrease the brightness in low ambient light. Not to be confused, I do not mean the configurable timeout (4, 8 or 16 sec) or focus or red shift either.

Imagine I am in a dark room. Brightness is set to maximum, battery saver is off, gesture is on. When I raise my arm, the screen comes up, but it is too dark. If I illuminate the watch display by a flashlight, the brightness goes up automatically. When I switch off the flashlight and keep the display busy, the brightness goes down again after a few seconds.

In this dark mode I hardly see the display, and can not see the small letters/numbers at all. I had no this issue with EPIX, of which brightness was independent form the ambient light.

Unfortunately I did not find any settings to get rid of this kind of dimming.

Any thoughts?

Best regards,

Istvan

  • Same here. Too low in dark light situations. I almost cannot read the numbers

  • In dark situation, but also when you just glance at the AOD without activating the regular face. It's very dark and the font is so thin you can barely see it.

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with this. If possible would you be able to capture some decent photos of what you are seeing in daylight, versus when there is no ambient light?

Also.does this coincide with any Sleep focus settings/times you have selected?

  • I have this problem also.

  • Same issue here. It is darker than my Epix 51mm in dim/dark situation, like a bedroom in the evening. And adjusting brightness to the max is not changing anything really...
Also using a torch (iphone light for example) on the display boost it up immediately to much better brightness. Temporary only.

  • Exactly the same problem for me as well.. it’s like having an auto brightness feature. In low light conditions the screen is not clear and vibrant and small letters and numbers are unreadable… please please help

  • As I wrote in my original post, it is not related to any focus settings. And I do not think a photo could be valuable in this case, but if you are from Garmin, you can reproduce this issue easily.

BTW, the local Garmin shop (where I purchased the watch) confirmed this problem. The best they could offer is to wait for a firmware update. So please fix it asap, Mr. Garmin. It is nonsense that I must carry a torch to read my watch, which also has a builtin torch. Thanks for your effort.

  • It’s definitely just with the stock watchfaces as store ones don’t do this. They went way to conservative on the stock ones. Luckily it’s an easy fix. Brighter and thicker time fonts on aod

  • I’m experiencing the same issue.

I just received my Fenix 8 AMOLED and went for an outdoor run.

I noticed that even with AOD enabled, the auto-dimming feature makes the display completely unreadable during activity.

You have to turn your wrist to see anything, which makes the watch unusable for running!
