Why isn't the Fenix 7 receiving new features?

To whom it may concern, at Garmin, I'm NOT HAPPY that the Fenix 7 series has gone into maintenance mode so quickly. I've been a Garmin user for decades, starting with FR305, followed by every FR iteration since, along with a Fenix 3, multiple 6S Pros, several Edges, etc.  I even have 2 Index S2s, countless HRMs

I paid too much for my Fenix 7 Solar for it to become a dead-end device this quickly. Besides bug fixes, it has half-baked features (think swim, HRM auto-connect, etc.) that must be finished appropriately.

I have the FR955 Solar, which will keep me going since it is still getting new features. But it was released just a few months after the Fenix 7 in 2022, so I figure it will be dead-ended soon as well.

Thus, I'm dead-ending my support of Garmin devices.

  • You just need to buy the right ones it seems..

  • Sure, you're perfetly right, but what about the ECG function? It's enablend in USE and many far Eest Countries, but not in Europe, of course F8 and chaper Venu3 have ECG...
It's a frustrating marketing policy for customers

  • FR255 doesn't have map, battery is limited for "outdoor" activities and my bank is ok for me to spent 1000€ in Fenix Series Stuck out tongue winking eye

  • Do dual Garmin then? One with release features and one that gets all the updates? Maybe they'll get maps with the next update.

  • The 965 is still the latest Forerunner model. The Fenix 7 two models old now.

Garmin want to keep selling the 965. Garmin don't want to keep selling the Fenix 7 and instead want you to buy an 8.

The Fenix sells more units than the Forerunner 9xx, hence the Fenix gets refreshed more often to keep the sales ticking off.

I get that people are upset because they no longer have the latest model after a year or so, but it's kinda like buying a Toyota Camry and then becoming upset once the model gets refreshed in 12 months time.

Ya'll can get mad at me for pointing this out, but it's is how consumer driven markets work. Oh, if you want to point out that "Apple provides new features to the Apple Watch <N> which is <N> years old, remember that the Apple Watch is a device that locks the consumer into staying within the Apple ecosystem, keeping them buying new phones, Apple streaming services, airpods, apps etc. They can afford to barely break even with the Apple Watch, perhaps even run at a loss with it due to its ability to lock people in. Garmin don't operate this way and only make money when you buy a new device.

Garmin NEED you to buy that new Fenix, so the tasty carrot of new features will always be dangling in front of you, tempting you, telling you that you need it, that you're deserve to splurge on that new silly feature that won't actually make you fitter. It's upto you to resist that and only buy the watch you NEED for your training and lifestyle.

  • How about this. Would people prefer a $600 Fenix 9 with zero features enabled by default (it's just a watch with ConnectIQ), but then have to pay $20 per month to unlock all of the newest features which are continually updated?

  • Depends on if those features actually work or are in the state we currently have. If they suspend my fee for every bug I find then yes.

Be careful with what you wish, ECG requires MFA, and MFA is a PITA.

And if you got MFA, its permanent, no way to go back.

  • There is no justification whatsoever to not make ECG available on the Fenix 7/EPIX PRO in the EU opposed to in the US.

  • I think Garmin users would be pissed off by the sudden change to a subscription model.

But you know what it's really about? About the transparency of Garmin's offer and update model.

I understand that Garmin doesn't forcefully release another iteration of a given series every year, but damn... because of that, when you buy a new watch, you don't know if it will be "fresh" for 2 years or for a few months because Garmin will release the Pro version soon.

Now Fenix 6 is still receiving some updates/patches, but it's really not known for how long. Even if Garmin doesn't want to declare the length of support at the time of release, for example, when Fenix 8 was released, they could have said that there will be minor updates for X months. And you know what? Probably some Fenix 6 users would think: "Maybe it's a good time to change the watch since it's losing support with updates? Fenix 6 works great for me and the new model has features that I like"
