What features does the Fenix 9 need to have to make you upgrade?

Since the release of the Fenix 8 is imminent close and the related feature discussion is closed, let's start over:

Hey everyone, with the Fenix 9 takes a glimpse far, far away on the horizon, I'm curious—what would make you excited enough to upgrade? Whether it's better sensors, longer battery life, or some totally new feature we haven't seen before, what would make the next Fenix irresistible for you? Let's get a discussion going and share our wishlists for what we hope to see in the next generation!

Please also take the point in time with a good sense of humor, we're in a user forum to share thoughts and also have fun, right?

  • Doesn't it pretty much already do all that, though? I mean, Garmin doesn't  actually use the term "AI" very often (and god bless them for that!)

    Totally agree.

AI - especially the currently hyped generative AI - is an ongoing field of work with great potential, but I don't see that product at all - at least not yet. Each and every system I have seen and evaluated so far suffers from hallucinations, heavily wrong answers and such. Using it supervised for assistive work is beneficial. But the Biggies are in the heavy lifting. And seeing the state of Garmin's software, they are nowhere near the Biggies ;)

  • I would love to have better accuracy in the health metrics department and way much better interpretation of these metrics, better calculation using their algorithms.

The sport profiles are more than enough to be extended even more, considering the vast majority of the people are either running, cycling, swimming, hiking or lifting weights.

  • The majority of sports is indeed covered by specific sport profiles, but someone will always miss something.

I would like to see a customizable profile for which you can set parameters such as the average ranges of speed, cadence, stride or stroke length (so the algorithms 'have an idea' of what to expect), sensors used, and wether or not performance metrics should be updated and steps should be counted. Most of the time there will be a sports profile that comes close enough and can be customized, but if there is not, a fully customizable profile would be perfect.

But it is not going to happen, it would eliminate the opportunity to add new sports as features for new or specialist watches.

So I'll wait patiently for the specialist Footbiking watch for the unmotorized leg-powered scooter users... :-)

  • race timing chip, that would be awesome :)

  • Great idea, although for most current bib-systems you would have to attach an external antenna for that to properly work, or for shoe-mounted systems, hold the watch close to the timing mat on the floor which would make you a tripping hazard :)

  • hm.. i don't exactly know how they work, but they cant be that big, and i think they are passive chips.
only basing it at what we are using at our races, where it's incased in the foam block size of 15x30x3mm pieces, and i'm sure it's not that much inside.

dont they normally work on RFID idea?

  • The principle is the same indeed. My age shows.. It must be a long time since I ran races, 3 cm seems short, older bibs had big-ish metal-foil antennas printed on them, before that we had chips on shoes and floor mats, and before that someone with a stopwatch :-)

  • we have race this weekend, i'll take photo ;)

ps> we hade people at the finish line taking time readings from finish line clock as well, but managed to purchase chip timing system - makes it easier :) - just have to remind people not to wonder around start/finish lines with their numbers around ;P

  • - Watertemperature Sensor

    - Display Fingerprint Scanner (like on Smartphones), for safe and fast NFC-Payment

    - Humidity Sensor (like my CAT S61)

    - Air Quality Sensor (like my CAT S61)

    - More solar cell area by giving them the whole edge area around the display. (with a very thing titan crown)

    - Smart Sleep Cylce Alarm Clock

  • I have that on my Galaxy Watch5 Pro :D
