When Fenix 8 is being released?
When Fenix 8 is being released?
I don't really care for the release date. What I mostly care of is to have MIP display if possible better than the one 7 series currently has. If they won't keep the MIP display with these nice stock watch…
The only thing a silicone plug helps with is speeding up the corrosion process which would have never started otherwise. Think of it as sand, dust and moisture trap :) never, under any circumstances use…
It may be possible to get some clues from Garmin patents, which are searchable on the US patent office website. Garmin frequently patents new watch designs and improvements in smartwatch technology. I…
Wouldn't be surprised if it gets Amoled, it seems to be the direction Garmin is taking with their watches. As nice as the Amoled screens can be there are times when I'd still prefer a MIP screen, especially for outdoors and always on without worrying about burn-in.
Fully agreed, and it seems to me that this is what Epix was created for
Long live MIP!
Coexisting with AMOLED, of course
Garmin's big issue is that there is a large subset of potential customers that don't seem to be aware that the EPIX is actually the Fenix with an AMOLED display. Look at how many people are asking for an AMOLED Fenix both on Reddit and in these forums. It was a bit of a giggle at first, but It's got to now be a little concerning for Garmin's product team.
Rather than go on a massive marketing push to get the EPIX name out there, It might actually be cheaper for Garmin to prevent brand dilution by giving the Fenix the AMOLED and direct the rest of us over to the Enduro which will keep the MIPS display (which will obviously now come in three sizes).
It’s crazy… I know DCRainmaker has repeatedly said this, and Garmin have confirmed it, so why do people not realise… if for some strange reason Garmin did pop an AMOLED screen on a Fenix, the same people would ask ‘why did you do that, it’s just an epic now!’… muppets
Because Garmin already basically did that with the Venu3 and Vivoactive 5. They could probably drop the VA line. IMO the outdoors / sports watches (including Forerunner) should have MIP screens with the 'lifestyle' watches having prettier Amoled screens.
Whenever it is, I'm hoping only for an improved MIP screen with 454x454 resolution and more colors. I would dare say InReach on a watch, but i think if that ever comes, Marq "explorer" or something is gonna get it
improved MIP screen with 454x454 resolution and more colors
That is impossible due to limitations of MIP technology. MIP displays are basically LCD (liquid crystal) displays with extra in-display memory - with semi-transparent micro mirrors behind each pixel. If you make each pixel smaller the contrast gets worse due to smaller amount of reflected light. For the same reason it is difficult to to make more colors. Pixels are not active - they work on reflected light. That means that controlling the amount of reflected light for each pixel is challenging.
From what I read about MIP LCD it is unlikely we'll see significant improvements. It is more likely that microLED displays will become available in the next few years. They would combine benefits of both MIP in terms of energy efficiency and AMOLED in terms of brightness and contrast. There was a rumor that Apple was going to use microLED for Apple Watch, but it seems we need to wait a bit longer.
That is impossible due to limitations of MIP technology.
Interesting, thanks for the heads up, my screen panel knowledge ends at PC monitor panel types, haven't actually met a MIP in "the wild" until i got F7X. Too bad if MIP tech has indeed reached a ceiling, I'm aware of the microLed developments, and that's why i'm almost certain we will never see them used commercially, at least not in this decade, which makes my discovery of MIPs apparent development cap even more tragic, as i absolutely adore this screen as a solution for any serious sports watch.
If it will indeed rock an OLED display, then hopefully never. Sports watch is the worst case scenario for OLED and microled is still at least a decade away.
