What does Fenix 8 / Tactix 8 Need To Have To Make You Upgrade?

all the 965 talk got me thinking about the future of fenix/tactix and what it would take to get me to upgrade. garmin has never disappointed me before and i don't expect them to in the future, but what to expect? for me it would be a pretty short list. i just need a new sensor. if there's not a new optical sensor with improved accuracy, i see no reason to upgrade as that is easily the most important aspect of the watch. ecg would be nice, i'd prefer to NOT have amoled (although battery with mips is nowhere near what garmin promises) and i don't really need wireless charging either (and it's WILDLY inefficient). i'd love to see better solar charging (better efficiency from the panels) or maybe something radical like flexible panels on the watch band. for tactix i'd like to see something over the top like emp-resistance. in the end though it would come down to elevate 5...

  • I challenge you to count the number of Fenixs at the Badwater Ultra (you won't find many suits)

My only point was that some runners seem to like Fenix bc of the aesthetics, which can take precedence over practical/functional concerns for some. No different than how some ppl openly say they bought AW Ultra at release for the social status. And no different than how some ppl probably wouldn’t be caught dead with any other brand than Apple.

It was a counterpoint to the argument that Fenix is the wrong watch for runners (although I actually agree in general).

  • I have and submitted a bug report about it which they apparently fixed a few firmwares ago. It now only gives turn notifications where there's a junction - which is the right thing to do.

It doesn't appear to be fixed to me. Here is a screenshot from FitFileViewer that shows a course that I created yesterday, synced it to the watch with turn notifications enabled, then copied it from the watch. All those arrows you can see below are turn notifications generated by Garmin Connect. You can see that almost none of them are at junctions. You can count how many course points are there in just one km.

  • In the old days we all survived 1-4 hours without connectivity

In old days I went out for half day, my parent's doesn't had phone at home and I'm still alive.
I'm doing my runs without phone and to be hones I enjoy that time being detached from anybody.
In my opinion Earth will "survive" if I will be disconnected for 2 or 3 hours couple times per day ;)

So I've got a friend who's a primary school teacher and she's mentioned that they've had to ban mobile phones from the classroom.. Not because the 7-year-olds are distracting themselves through being on Tik Tok, but rather because some parents have become so anxious that they incessantly text their children through the day asking if they're okay, is the teacher being fair, are they being picked on, did they like their lunch etc. take a look at the Garmin Bounce if you want evidence of this growing trend in the US. The device tracks your childs location through the day and will alert you if they roam outside of some predefined boundary that you've set. It also gives the parents the abilities to be able to send voice messages back and forth to the child (1). Yep, It's aimed at kids from what appears to be 5-10 something. Wild.

We're living in a different age my friend. A lot of people expect constant connectivity to the important people in their lives - how are they going to solve common problems or vent when things go wrong otherwise? People make all kinds of bizarre assumptions about your relationship with them if you haven't replied within the hour, because hey, all of us are almost all the ways on our phones right. Not replying must have been a choice.

Anyway, I think it's ridiculous too, but that's the world we're operating in, hence I need to look for products that can satisfy that need if a panicky person does try and seconder my assistance mid-run.

This is quite a sad revelation, but my ideal device would run Slack and have a very robust method of converting voice to text for replies. Most of those panicky reach outs in my case are from colleagues unfortunately.

(1)I'm guessing this is a feature that's going to be pulled into the Fenix line either in the 8 or 8+. Would be pretty useful to be able to shoot voice messages back and forth between yourself and your partner, or the other folks on that group ride or group run if you become separated.

I guess I get it. Perhaps it's a bit of a sad flex spending thousands of dollars in the hope of having some stranger potentially think a certain thought about you in the brief moment that you interaction, but each to their own.

As an avid biker, I see the same thing in cycling culture. Folks will buy the newest model because it shaves 8 watts in drivetrain loss and aero when compared to a model that's a couple of years older. They'll happily spend $14k to achieve the same optimisation that I can make by moving my elbows inwards slightly on their old bike Smile. Thank god for them though. We'd only be seeing new Fenixs and bikes every 10 years if people were sensible with their purchases.

  • I would say it us letting other to convince us that we need to be constant connected make that issue.
My daughter got her first mobile when she was eleven, and I was contacting her during day only in urgent cases (and otherwise). When she was on summer camp I always try to found some which clearly stated we will collect all phones from children and give them back once or twice per week if they would to call home.

Moreover, I don't know you are aware but in Norway, bringing mobile to primary school is forbidden and they noticed only positive results, such laws are also in other countries.

I will repeat, issue is located in our heads because we let others to convince us we have to be constantly connected, we don't need. And for our health we even shouldn't.

  • The usually very well informed winfuture leaked images some days ago and information about the new Fenix 8. Probably will be introduce during IFA2024. They basically killed the real fenix line.

Everything amoled as it seems. Fenix E seems to be amoled also, from pictures with it's watchface at least. Plus Fenix E has the old F7 HR sensor. No small versions anymore according to winfuture. Only 47mm and 51mm. Fenix = amoled with 47 and 51mm and Enduro is MIP with 51mm only. HR sensor SEEMS to be the latest from F7 Pro and V3 line, from pictures at least.

Who the *** buys a Fenix E with old F7 sensor?

I will keep my 42mm 7s, maybe upgrade to a 7s Pro when it gets cheaper. But it already was too heavy and thick for my wrist. So I decided for a second device a smaller and lighter and thinner Forerunner 255s before they aren't sold anymore at all.

Garmin has nothing new for my taste anymore. Guess the 7s Pro with it's newer sensor and a FR255s will keep me on track for a longer time :D

No details on SW elements but it seems like the F8 is an Epix pro in disguise. Very very disappointing.

  • Only 47mm and 51mm

Garmin obviously have sales figures that I don't, but there seem to be a lot of women who wear the 42mm Fenix. I find it hard to believe they wouldn't continue to satisfy that market.

Enduro is MIP with 51mm only

I'm really struggling to believe that. Surely it's going to be offered in the 47mm as well. I use my Fenix as a cycling head unit given it pretty much does everything that the Edge devices do), so it'd be a real shame to have that battery die after only a few hours of powering an AMOLED screen at full brightness.

Who the *** buys a Fenix E with old F7 sensor?

I'm guessing Garmin ordered too many of Elevated V4 sensor and they're looking to sell them rather than dump them in a bin in a few years.

As for who would buy that model, well I would if the savings were big enough. The Fenix 7 sensor has been pretty good in my opinion, and I don't particularly need ECG at this point, so why not.

  • so why not

I would argue mainly because it is essentially the same watch as the non-pro Fenix 7/Epix, but costs 300€ more. Once the prices are the same, I would agree on the "why not?" Slight smile

  • Probably will be introduce during IFA2024.

The IFA starts on September 6. Rumors claim that the fenix could launch on 27 August
