GPS problems and watch keeps disconnecting!

Fenix 6S s working perfectly until April this year when big app update came in. Ever since then, I've had issues with GPS accuracy which has now resulted in almost never getting a connection when out running. Watch keeps disconnecting from Garmin Connect app on an almost daily basis. Tracking my runs with my watch is now virtually impossible.

Is this a software issue and what can I do to remedy it?

Re GPS, I have tried changing it from GPS only to GPS + GLONASS or GPS + GALILEO. No luck.

I have checked the EPO and CPE files. They are apparently up to date.

I have tried doing a 20-minute GPS soak. GPS connected for a second and then the line went red again.

I am at a loss as to what to do.

Any advice would be hugely welcome.

  • Garmin Connect is probably not the guilty one, since appart of syncing the CPE file to the watch, it does not influence the GPS in any way. I recommend hard-resetting the watch - sync, then press the Light button for some 30s till it completely shuts down (hold the button through the emergency alert, if it comes), wait little bit, and then restart. No worry, no data or settings will be lost with it. [more details]. Then start the watch and connect it over the USB cable to a computer with Garmin Express, delete the CPE file in the folder //GARMIN/RemoteSW/ on the watch, and then check for updates in Garmin Express. And then log another test activity, and see whether it helped. If not, reach out to the Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com

  • Thanks for your advice. I've reset the watch and deleted the CPE file, and have then connected it to Garmin Express and it is fully updated. I've stood outside for a few minutes attempting to get a GPS lock but sadly no luck.

I don't have a CPE file in the RemoteSW folder any more. Should the update have installed a new CPE file?

  • When you connect the watch to the computer with Garmin Express and check for updates, the CPE file (EPO on older models) is downloaded automatically. Try repeating the connecting and checking for updates two or three times, and if you still do not get the fresh CPE, then I recommend contacting the Support.

  • ... you could also try connecting the computer with an alternative Internet access point, if possible. If you do not get the CPE file, perhaps there is some connectivity problem on the route between your router and the server with the data.
