Where to get a replacement battery for Fenix 6

With the annoucement of a disappointing and overly priced Fenix 8 range I have decided to keep my F6 Sapphire going for a few more years but realise that at some point I will need a new battery. In readiness I have started searching for a replacement battery but checking the usual chinese suppliers there does seem to be a vast descrepancy between supposedly compatible batteries from various sellers.

Given my past experiences with poor battery life on Garmin replacement devices I do not fancy going down that route again so if anyone knows where to find a battery please let me know.

  • this is what I found:

    Fenix 7X https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Garmin+f%C4%93nix+7X+Teardown/156672

    Fenix 5 Plus https://www.edn.com/teardown-a-smartwatch-with-an-athletic-tradition/

    Fenix 6X Pro http://www.f-blog.info/garmin-fenix-6x-pro-disassembly-or-teardown-whatever-you-say/

but nothing on Fenix 6 or 6 Pro, yet

Looking at the photos, you can see battery capacity and you can probably find some replacement with exact size, but for that we would need to see inside of the watch. I'm similarily interested in 6 Pro teardown photos, but not found yet

  • NOPE !!! Never !!!! False Advice !!

    1)

    F6 Sapphire

You are linking to a battery that is ADVERTISEDLY  for a 6X. This was not asked for.

Physically, a 6x battery is the wrong size and does not fit into a 6

    2)

This is another one of those websites offering false products. The battery offered there is NOT even suitable for the watch specified threre!

It is a 3.7V battery. Wrong voltage !

If you install this battery, you run the risk of losing your device due to a LiIon fire. And possibly even more than the watch will burn down as a result. If you are not familiar with these batteries, you should keep your hands off them. DANGER !

    For  Safety :

Even if these batteries are so small and look harmless, they pose a danger that should not be underestimated if handled improperly!

I strongly recommend that you do not replace the battery yourself if you have no experience in handling them !

Lithium fires can occur suddenly if a mistake is made. Gases are suddenly emitted, leading to a flash fire and the development of a great deal of heat. These fires are not easy to extinguish.

    DANGER

Just one example (even if the battery in this video has a larger capacity, smaller ones are no less dangerous)

  • I had this website bookmarked just in case I needed a new battery for my 6X. There is a search function in there to look for your specific model.

I didn't know it was a scam site, thanks for pointing it out

Yes, you have to be careful with the information on the websites. You are welcome Thumbsup

  • The most reliable way to find the model/type of battery is opening your watch and taking a look, which also helps to see what the work involved is, does the battery have a specifc shape, does it have a connector or need soldering, how long are the leads, is it stuck with doublesided tape or hotglued in place, etc. I only replaced batteries in Fenix 2, 3 and 5 Plus and with each generation it beomes more difficult. Getting a battery out of a 5Plus wihout tearing the battery open was already an ordeal.

Wait with opening up your watch until you really can't work with the battery life anymore, because there is always a risk involved.

Some sell you a new battery that has been lying around for years. If it is flat upon arrival, it is no good.

IMHO if I have had a watch open, I don't consider it waterproof anymore and I will not swim with it.

  • I ordered two new batteries for my Fenix 6X from AliExpress. Pretty cheap. Also hoping to keep my F6X going for a few more years.

  • I have found a couple of videos on YT of people openng F6 but unfortunately the quality of the videos/unclear images of battery mean it is difficult to ascertain any details on the battery.

I'm not to bothered about submersion waterproofing, just as long it is shower proof and to that end I am hoping greasing any seals I may encounter will be sufficient.

It is a shame Garmin do not offer a battery replacement service but only offer an out of warranty refurb swap. The problem with that is that I have learnt from experience that they will still have part used batteries and the one I was sent had significantly reduced battery life, Garmin were not interested when I raised this issue as they claimed it was 'still within specification'.

Hence why I am forced down the DIY route

  • Here is the battery I ordered for my 6X : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007139907075.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.34.6dfa1802VDeQ4C

I also have B7000 glue incase I need to seal and waterproof the watch up after doing the battery surgery. The watch is now 3.5 years old and the battery is not as good as it was before. Hopefully with fresh batteries I can get 3 more years out of it.
