Fenix 6 Pro GPS issue following version 27 update

Apologies for the repeat question...

In the last couple of weeks the GPS for any tracking activities (local walks, hikes in the Brecon Beacons, playing football etc) is all over the place with "You need to reboot to use GPS" messages after every time I save activity.  I am neither a super tech head nor a total tech numpty but would really appreciate some kind advice on possible options to explore.

I have done the standard power off / power on (not the one where you have to hold several of the buttons to complete a factory reset?)

I no longer have access to Garmin Express (temporarily moved house, home PC in storage limited to work laptop which is usb disabled for security!) so could this be preventing me resolving the situation?  If so I can locate the home PC and try booting that up.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated...

Jamie

check your Fenix connecting to wifi. Then go into Fenix menu (long press left middle button). Select System/Software Update / Check for updates.

After it syncs, see if there’s an ‘install update’ message. Update and restart.

Then go into Menu / System / About and scroll down to screen showing driver versions (GPS, Wifi etc) -see pic of my 6X as example. post a picture of your 6 Pro after checking updates

  • Thanks Ryan,

Tried syncing using usual home wifi (which is working) and watch appeared to be searching for ever to find network.  Then when I tried to follow the remainder of the (great) instructions - the watch tells me that a sync is in progress.  Left it for a bit but then tried again - still talking about sync in progress!

I did then check the about screen you requested and I seem to have the same as you:

If the watch is stuck in wifi syncing shall I power down, forget & refind wifi?

Does the "about" information shed any light on the issue?

    Thank you for your patience...

  • It can take a while for the sync to finish depending on what updates are needed.

It looks like these files aren’t corrupt, which is good. You should be on version 27.

if you can locate your computer I suggest you run Express to do a full sync. There are map updates that don’t sync on my Fenix by wifi or Bluetooth. While you’re on computer, download Garmin Webupdater and it will check for missing drivers / reinstall software.

I’m in Australia so nearing bedtime here. Try a short activity once you’re sync is finished. .

  • Thanks Ryan - very useful.

I'll do all of those recommendations and check it out before bothering you again!

  • One more. For the test activity you’re using to record (eg Walk) are you just using GPS or GPS / GLONNAS? If you’re on just GPS try a different GNSS combination.

  • previously used GPS / GLONNAS before it went awry so now have it set to GPS plus the european satellites (foolishly thinking the Russian fleet might be interferring with my happiness!).

Another point to mention - when it was not appearing to find my WiFi network I decided to remove it from my available networks.  I fear that the long time syncing may relate to the fact that I've removed it's connection to the cloud!?

It still tells me that wifi sync is already in progress but when I try to add in a new network it states "transfer already in progress".  I have tried to power down and it takes a longer period of time pressing the light button before stating "Set up assistance using Garmin Connect mobile".  I'm afraid when I go into my mobile and the Garmin Connect App I don't really know what I'm looking for...

It could be that I've just confused the *** out of it and it simply needs time in a dark room away from me!?

  • I said to a mate that some GNSS would be compromised so good point about the Russian Fleet.

Turn your home wifi Off and your Fenix and you’ll hopefully get a sync failed message. Restart your Fenix then Wifi. If you move out of wifi range you’ll probably get the sync failed message but the off/on will make sure.

in Connect, on phone, try settings / device settings / General / Wi-fi networks, then for your network update your password and test network. Mine randomly forgets the password every 6-8 months and did it during the beta phase (26-27)

for the moment in System / Software Updates turn off Auto Update for a few days, at least until you’ve tested some activities. GPS or GPS + Galileo should be fine.
