Fenix 6 Pro Solar not recognized by windows 10

Hello Garmin,

My Fenix 6 Pro Solar is not being recognized by my Windows 10 PC (tried different cables, other watches are being recognized, also tried different PCs), cannot find Wi-Fi networks (tried multiple, 2.4 GHz, also via the phone Connect) and is not being recognized by Garmin Express. This started around a year ago, when I updated the watch to 26.00. Garmin Express is updated to the latest current version (7.20.3.0).

Tried resetting the watch, testing wi-fi in diagnostic mode, nothing works. Since I use the watch as a bike computer, and like to not take my phone with me for runs with music, not being able to update maps or upload any music renders the device useless for me. I lost all hope a year ago, but I've noticed similar issues being mentioned in the forums recently, so am giving it one last shot.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • I’ve found during some upgrades that my 6X randomly changes settings eg Max HR, watchface, data recording from every second to Smart etc. You said other devices work so it looks like it’s Fenix issue. It wasn’t clear if you can device folders when connected.,Have you checked Menu/ System/ USB Mode is set to MTP ( Media Transfer)?

I also find that I need to clean terminals on Fenix and cable with cotton tip soaked in spirit. Dirty terminals still usually show charging symbol but don’t read data.

I’ve included a link to a Garmin article. Can you try the steps in the article.

  • Thank you for your answer! Sadly, I did all the steps in the article, switched the USB Mode from Garmin to MTP multiple times, no effect.

  • Hopefully next full release is available soon. It went to beta 26.97 a few days ago with miscellaneous fixes and that seems to be last step.

iHave you considered joining beta? You can update over the air.

  • No wi-fi nor pc cable connection, can't update :(

  • Do you connect to app by Bluetooth ok?
I found an article about forcing a connection. It advises this:

Forcing a Garmin to Mount as a Drive

    1. Disconnect the Garmin from the computer and ensure the Garmin is powered off.
    2. Press and hold START/STOP.
NOTE: Press and hold GPS if you have an Instinct.
    3. Plug the Garmin into the computer.
    4. Wait until the Garmin is recognized by the computer, it may take up to 45 seconds for the device to be recognized as a drive.
      • If prompted, install USB device drivers.
    5. Release START/STOP.
NOTE: Release GPS if you have an Instinct

  • Thank you for the suggestion, this is something I did not try yet!

However, after doing the steps above, it is still not mounting as a drive (I have 2 drives on this PC, and the watch is not appearing as one of them). Instead, it appears as an Unknown USB Device. Same as when I try to simply connect it to the PC with either of the USB modes (Garmin/MTP). Uninstalling this device from the PC also doesn't help.

Bluetooth does indeed work, and apps/watch faces/weather/activities do get synced correctly.

  • Reinstall / update the driver.

I found this tip in The Windows Club. I can’t post the link.

    1. Right-click on USB Root Hub, and from the context menu, choose Properties.
    2. Go to the Power Management section.
    3. Uncheck the box that says Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
    4. Tap on OK, and repeat the process for all the installed USB Root Hub.
    5. Exit the window and restart the system.
  • Great suggestion, tried it. Also followed all the steps from here, just to make sure. But it's still not getting recognized. I doubt that it's a PC/driver problem, since I tried this watch on multiple PC's (even brought it to a local Garmin shop, they tried as well) and it doesn't get recognized anywhere Disappointed if only I could get it to either connect to Wi-Fi or PC, everything would be fine, but both just don't work.

  • Time to contact Garmin Support directly. This is something that does not happen often unless there are problems with cables or the watch connection. Is there any corrosion evident on the pins on the watch?

  • My Fenix 6X Pro had the same problem and was replaced under warranty. However a workaround that I had been using was to start the watch in service mode by holding the down button when powering up and then connect the watch to a PC while in service mode. Give it a couple of minutes while connected this way and it might connect.
