Garmin Coach Jeff Half Marathon

Very disappointed with this feature. I followed the plan the whole way through for a race time of 1.32. I completed all the training and had my confidence level in purple up to race day. However I was a good 7 minutes out from my time and really struggled second half of race. Conditions were fine so I don’t think they played a part. It really didn’t help that the watch didn’t give me a pacer with the race day run it just said run 13 miles! I ended up having to try to keep just a little behind the 1.30 pacer, which probably mad me run a little too quickly to begin with, at around 6.50 pace, and which then meant I blew up halfway through and came in at just under 1.40. It’s very frustrating as I’ve run quicker than that without running a plan and this one had me believing I was fit enough to exceed a 1.32 time.

  • You went out too hard and didn't know when to back off?  How is that Jeff's fault?

  • Well 1 I didn’t say it was Jeff’s fault. I said I was frustrated with the app. And 2 it was annoying the race day run didn’t include a pacer, which might have better helped me judge pace. And 3, I was only about 10 seconds faster per mile at the beginning but then I slowed down after 4 miles but the drop off was massive. Makes me doubt how good the training was.. As apparently I was exceeding my goal for a 1.32 but running faster than that time in the first few miles caused me to totally blow up.

  • The app has no way to predict how fast you will be running or won't know anything about the course itself.  If you need pacing for the race then you should use a pacepro pacing strategy - that is exactly what it was created for.  As well as that we are not machines and sometimes raceday does not go as expected.

  • I get what you are saying but all the training sessions were designed around a set time. The speed work sessions had a pacer and would tell me if I was under or over the time. I just assumed that as I had chosen to follow a plan with a set time as a goal my race day run would have paced me for it. As it just pops up on your watch on the day of the race, as per the schedule, I didn’t check this beforehand. First I knew it didn’t have this feature was when the race had started and it was too late to change it. If I hadn’t done the race day run from the schedule it would probably have not recorded that I had finished the plan.

  • Would it really matter if it hadn't recorded that you finished the plan?  I think you are concentrating too much on the watch rather than the actual running.  The watch and training plans are a useful tool but you shouldn't let it dictate your training.  The watch can't really tell how you are feeling/performing - you need to judge this yourself.  I see so many people on the forum that blindly rely on the "daily worksout suggestion."   Training plans are very useful but there is no one-size-fits-all
