Have you ever gotten a burn from charging port?

Hi there,

I was sent a refurbished watch in exchange for my Fenix 6S Sapphire (faulty light). It’s only been 2-3 months I have the ne one. Only that the other day I woke up with a burning sensation close to where I was wearing my watch (a little bit looser than usual, it seems I didn’t put it back as tight as I usually do after charging it). As it was the middle of the night I didn’t see what it was but in the morning woke up with a nasty blister. Shap consistent with the charging port shape.

has anyone ever experience the same issue? I contacted Garmin but they have been really unhelpful, disregarding the potential health & safety issue.

  • Hard to tell whether it is really a burn, or rather an allergic reaction. The later is more common - it can be an allergy to metals, and also an allergy caused by the bacteria that easily accumulates in the contacts cavity. It is for this reason, that I use a rubber plug for the contacts. You can buy a dozen of them for a few cents on Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, etc.

In your place, I would measure the temperature of the contacts with a thermometer, and also the voltage between individual pins with a multimeter. If you find the contacts are hot, or that there is more than a few tens of millivolts between the case and the pins, then there is a hardware problem, and in such case I recommend requesting a replacement.

In the opposite case (no high temperature, and no high voltage), avoid wearing the watch on that wrist till it fully heals, clean the watch (incl. the contacts) with 70% alcohol, buy the plugs, and try wearing the watch on the other wrist. Also, I recommend doing an allergy skin test at a specialist.

  • Personally I doubt that's from the charging port.  How could your watch be on your wrist and tilted at that angle? It's nearly 45 degrees.  I mean I guess it's possible if it was REALLY loose, but I expect you've got yourself an insect bite there.  Potentially an insect that got trapped under your watch and stung you multiple times.

I agree with trux though, get yourself some plugs to rule it out in the future if it was somehow caused by the watch charging pins.  Looks nasty too, take good care of it so it doesn't get infected!

  • We are sorry to hear about the issue you are reporting. The skin irritation may be a result of build-up on the watch band and/or casing. You should discontinue wearing your watch until your skin has healed.
