Charging from mobile device directly?

Anyone tried to charge their watch from a USB-C device? I got a USB-C cable from my friends Instinct 2x Solar to try. I plugged his watch to my xperia 1 VI and got a message "Unsupported analog audio device" . Same goes for my Fenix 6 Pro Solar, "Unsupported analog audio device" It would be very useful if Garmin could enable the charging from mobile devices.

  • It would be very useful if Garmin could enable the charging from mobile devices.

This is a matter of the phone's operating system. My Garmin watches can be charged on my iphone 15 Pro without any problems.

  • Yes, it is possible.

My f6X is currently being charged from my Pixel 6 Pro using an Anker USB 3.0 USB-C to USB-A Adapter and the Garmin cable supplied with my f6X. It will also charge using the Google supplied USB-C to USB-A OTG Adapter and the Pixel 7 Pro I have is able to charge my f6X. (I don't have a USB-C to Garmin cable at present.) I the past I also charged my f5+ from a Nokia 7 Plus.

Both phones report the f6X as a "null" device which I would expect as the phones do not support being an MTP Host which is required to properly identify the watch and allow data transfer. As far as I can tell no Android devices support being an MTP Host.

Even with the phone reporting an "Unsupported analogue audio device" it should still be providing power to charge.

  • It should but it doesn't. I have tried other devices today. No luck just unsupported analog audio device. My xperia 1 vi is running android 12 as i need root, i do not want to update to 13 or later android. The anker adapters are active so they will consume power probably thats why you could charge it. From two of my laptops only my latitude rugged has only one USB-A 2.0 dedicated port for legacy devices.

  • I've tried powering some other devices from my Android phones and it does require an OTG adapter for the phone to provide power, I presume an OTG cable would do the same.

Incidentally, my f6x charged from 18% to 98% in around 1 hour 25 minutes.

  • Now its working I've purchased a charging dock and modified it no cables just plugs in directly. it charges around 30 minutes plus i have access to the storage on the watch with tcm from android.

What dock did you purchase and how did you modify it?

i have access to the storage on the watch with tcm from android.

    What is "tcm"?

Searching for "tcm" (or "TCM") on the Google Play Store returns steaming media apps related to Turner Classic Movies. (Same for a Google search.)

  • So you are saying that with the Total Commander app on Android you can access the Fenix 6 Pro MTP storage when it is connected to the phone? That would be great news. Common opinion is that android doesn't support MTP devices.

  • I am working on my custom kernel for my xperia 1 Vi. it is recognizing a media device but cannot switch to control yet. I need lib mtp compiled in for sure. however if i boot into twrp recovery. it can see a few different partitions on the watch connected. interesting.
