Altimeter not working since software 23.84

Since last November, starting with version 23.84 my altimeter starting to indicate crazy values ex: changing from +10000 to -300 in a minute! No more floors counting. The behavior is similar with this one. www.youtube.com/watch

With previous the version, 23.83, the altimeter was working.

I tried to calibrate all methods: manual, gps or dem. It behaves like is not recording the new value obtained by calibration.

I swim weekly 5-6times/week about 2000m/activity. I was thinking that the issue is related with the Pool Swim activities.

I'm not the only one. I have a friend with similar issue, same Fenix 6 Pro + weekly swimming and the altimeter stop working starting with the update version 24.00 with no beta program but the same period of time when switching from version 23.10 (altimeter was working) to  24.00 (altimeter not working anymore).

Now I have Software Version 26.00.

Please provide me a solution to fix the sensor/problem.

  • Hi, GPS Alitmeter is not a sensor, but a read information from the GPS signal.

You should have an hardware issue with the sensor regardingall the missing info (Temp/Baro/Floor). Can you look at the Meanu, System, Info and tell us what are the version for WHR / Sensor, etc.

If you see 0.00 or 65.535 then you have a hardware issue.

Otherwise try to reset your watch (long press on light uppper left until shutdown, then update it through Garmin Express (recommended).

  • Software version 26.00

    GPS: 6.60 Wi-Fi:4.01 CIQ: 3.4.2 BMX: 5.1.0 WHR: 5.01.00 ANT/BLE/BT: 6.15 Sensor Hub: 22.09

I have already reset the watch several times but with no success. The only workaround is to downgrade software version and sensor hub.

  • Same here: WHR: 5.01.00 with Software version 26.00.

  • Software version 26.00

    GPS: 6.60 Wi-Fi:4.01 CIQ: 3.4.2 BMX: 5.1.0 WHR: 5.01.00 ANT/BLE/BT: 6.15 Sensor Hub: 22.09

What I can't digest is why after updating sw version above 2.20, in oct 2022, most of us (maybe all) started to have the same defect on the baro sensor (used to calculate the altitude in the absence of gps for floors/climbing etc)? Even for activities tracked by gps, it alters the result (I had a 15km cycling activity on mostly flat terrain, logged as 3300m positive difference).

I didn't try to downgrade the sw for v2.19 or less, but some users did and they reported that the issue is gone. How can Garmin support ask for a fee to replace something that works with lower version of the sw? I am tempted to say that the baro sensor component has two hardware versions with slightly differences, one that was tested for later updates and another that was missed or excepted from latest sw updates.

  • I can confirm the same thing: during swimming the altitude drops to hundreds of meters below sea level. As soon as I take the watch out of the water - it goes up instantly to original altitude (around 38-40m).

Now, I've disabled the altimeter during the swim, and this helps, but it clearly proves that something is wrong with the barometer, maybe it's too sensitive in the water (?).

I hope devs address this. Thanks,

  • What are this versions 2.20 and 2.19 ? For which components of the watch ?

I can't find them in my repositery ...

  • Not sure it's the same issue but Garmin fix this for Fenix 7 Series

14.30 16/08/2023 Fixed All Fixed possible issue with altimeter after a swimming activity.
  • It's a typo (2.20 should be 22.0). Last sw version that I can see with logs for floors is 23.00 (oct 2022). I have no info about other component versions from that time.

  • Same issue.  I swim 5 days a week and altimeter quit.  Tried to calibrate and nothing changes.  I had the same issue with the fenix 5 and upgraded to the 6 only to have same issue.  Frustrating when I monitor alttude gains on runs.

  • Disapointing isn't it.
