Two Problems - Not tracking properly AND Missing Map Sections

Not really the end of the world.  I mostly use Track Me or some other activity type, just to record a track in my automobile, while driving from point A to point B.  But I notice two things.

1) My vehicle is NOT shown on the road, and there is no near by rode to confuse it.  I was traveling on the blue road but my vehicle is far off to the right.   See pic.  Why doesn't the watch put me on the closest road, like most GPS?

2) While tracking me, the map will have sections of maps missing.  I notice there is a two colored display, the roads end, when the color changes.   What causes this?  Could it be the vehicle is moving too quickly to update the map?  This is not always close to center.  Sometimes it's toward the bottom, and other times its near the top.  However, the missing map is always on the oposite side to the direction of travel, and does move as I move.  What causes this.  The actual recorded track is exactly correct though, in both cases 1 and 2.

  • There are two things taking place at the same time. Yes - your watch is not drawing your map and refreshing your map quickly enough while you are driving since your watch model is designed around running, hiking, and walking speeds. Also, the same speed related issue is taking place while driving for your GPS acquisition and positioning coming from all 4 GPS satellites needed to position you.

You may still be able to clean up the issue though. Go into your Track Me settings and ensure your GPS is set to both GPS + Glonass. Also, go into your System > Data Recording menu and change your GPS update to Every Second.

  • That's kind of what I figured.  I was probably expecting too much from a watch designed for slower activity types.   It's not really an issue, because the recorded track is perfect, and that's all I was really trying to capture. But I will look at suggestions you made.

    Thanks

Update: I just checked.  GPS is set for GPS + Glonass, but Data Recording was set to "Smart" so I changed it to "Every Second" and will test this to see if that makes a difference (besides more battery drain, which I can tolerate).

This would be a good test.  Setup and activity, and keep it running until battery is low, just to see how long it runs when updating GPS every second.

  • Side note: Is there a Garmin watch that is better suited for automobile activity types?  I still use my Fenix 6x for fitness but if there is one that does both, that might be better.

  • There is not. Our Automotive Drive devices are intended for cars are designed around the speed and other unique aspects that come with driving like forking roads and complex highway exits etc. There was a brief period of time early on in the Fenix 5 series where Automotive was briefly a thing but it did not work out and it has since been removed from that generation and no longer re-added into what has been released since then.

  • GPS are USA GPS satellites. Glonass is Russia. Galileo are the newest GPS satellites recently added and are run by Europe.

GPS + Glonass usually works best in North America. In Europe, GPS + Galileo will likely work better. It is worth trying both depending on where you live.
