This support article explains what you can back up. However, the things op want cannot be backed up.

Ah interesting, I’ve always been able to do a perfect restore on all of my Edge devices, and even though I’ve made multiple backups of my 6x Pro, I’ve never actually needed to restore it. Assumed the settings.fit file and similar would contain what the OP needed.

Your linked support article is not specific to the "outdoor-watches". The article for the watches says "
SETTINGS - contains Settings.fit file which stores user profile and CERTAIN device settings."

I have not yet managed to restore the settings requested by the OP. If it does work, that would be really nice. Has anyone already managed to successfully restore the desired things from the backup ? 

I have restored settings.fit numerous times (after resets or downgrades) because I have many ANT+ sensors. It restores only those sensors. Maybe also some personal settings, but no app settings (i.e. no screens defined for running etc).

I thought those app settings were more likely to be in the sports.fit file?

Have you only restored the settings.fit file or all of the others (sports, location etc)?

I did restore sports as well, but that was between a Fenix 5 and Fenix 6 and I ended up with all default sports settings (tried to restore to Sports and Newfiles)

But you are right, restoring Locations.fit works great. Also courses and workouts too.

I have a 6X and used the method listed in the article linked by others. As article says back up your current files in device by copying folders to computer. Before copying device contents, I did a sync via Garmin Express.

once I copied everything to computer, I then copied files I wanted to transfer, such as Settings, Records, Location, Sports etc to a different folder.

 After resetting my 6X, I used Express to apply updates again and then disconnected / restarted 6X again until no more updates presented. 

I then copied the files I wanted to bring across into NewFiles folder on 6X and synced using Express. After syncing I restarted and files were there.

Note: For my Sports activities (run, walk etc) on 6X if I had made data screens with 8 fields only 6 came across. Also, I set time as Military but mine defaulted to 12 Hour, and my Data Recording was ‘Smart’ but I use ‘Every Second’. All minor things.
