Daylight Savings Time Issue in Mexico After Recent DST Changes

Since Sunday morning all my Garmin devices (including a Fenix 6)  are showing incorrect time here in Mexico City. In short they all show the time as it would be if DST (Daylight Savings) was in place (one hour ahead) but (nearly all) of Mexico no longer observes DST. @Garmin you need to update the timezone map you send to the devices with correct information for Mexico!

  • When I set time to "auto" and select to "synchronize with GPS" the clock is set inaccurately so for now I have set the time manually. Regarding the timezone map "difficulty" it should not be worse than for US where not all states have DST and then inside states without DST parts of the state does have DST anyway :-)

For Mexico until now most states (but not all) had DST. Now most will not have DST but some (the ones bordering US) may opt for having it anyway but not the rest of the states...

  • Exactly, update Time Zone Map, use Garmin Express to be sure.

If you already use this version, come here to comment for Garmin attention.

    20230320 - Time Zone  Map update 32.00

    Version Description
32.00 Updated Daylight Saving Time for Mexico and Greenland
  • My Fenix 6 shows timezone map version 28 so it must be rather old... SW level is 25.10. I am in the beta program but I have not sideloaded the last two updates manually. Any idea why I am not getting an updated TZ map pushed more frequently?

My Foreunner 645 which I may not have synchronized the last two weeks just received a timezone update and is now showing correct time even when synchronizing with GPS. The gmaptz version is shown as 31 in this device (not sure what it was before the update).

  • Any idea why I am not getting an updated TZ map pushed more frequently?

    Have you tried this?

update Time Zone Map, use Garmin Express to be sure.
  • Nope - but I will if I don't get the update during the day. I don't have Garmin Express installed anymore, all updates are via the app on the telephone. I get beta updates with about 1 day delay so it usually works fine for me...

  • Just a followup for those that may be interested.

Yesterday I ended up installing Garmin Express on my PC and connect my Fenix 6 and it didn't show an update to the timezone map on my watch, only updates of other maps (the pre-installed for North America) - which I ended up installing in the evening.

The timezone map however must have been upgraded during the day (and is now showing version 32 where it was previously 28) but I don't know if it was GE or the phone that did it, I never saw any upgrade offered. My forerunner 645 eventually showed a timezone map update (as well as SW update from 6.80 to 6.90) and is now on 32 as well.

The Fenix 6 is now mostly showing the correct time when synced to GPS or after restart but a couple of times it has suddenly jumped one hour back (not ahead as if DST was active) and I haven't figured out why. The time in my telephone is manually set to correct TZ and time for example and syncing in Garmin Connect does not change the time in the watch (it will if I change the timezone in the telephone for example)...

  • So here nearly four weeks later I still see problems with the clock (randomly) jumping back one hour or ahead one hour even after the initial install of time zone map release 32 and later on release 33 (which should contain additional corrections for Mexico).

I have kind of a parallel thread in the Beta tester forum https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/fenix-6-series/f/community-discussion/330758/timezone-confusion-mexico-city (but all of my experienced problems are on  the generally available SW release 25.10).

The last days I see frequent "time jumps" and interestingly enough and especially if the clock jumps ahead as if DST was still active the only fix seems to be to sync time with satellites. It sometimes take many minutes so it is getting annoying.

With my Forerunner 645 it is very clear when there in an update to the time zone map. In the Fenix 6 it is never shown to me and I am still a little uncertain if the problem now is the time zone map itself or if the SW on phone (my Foreunner 645 does not seem to make the jumps of time).

After installing time zone map release 33 I could see a difference in the menu "Clocks/Alt. Time Zones" where time zones can be added is that when I select Mexico, the time zones shown for cities like Acapulco and Cuernavaca that both are in the same time zone as Mexico City were shown as the same time zone as Mexico city. For a few days now they again show as "-1hr".

From comment in the other thread and other posts I can see I am not the only one experiencing this erratic behavior.
