Calories not starting at zero

I don’t wear my watch in bed and switch it off overnight, however I’m noticing that when I put the watch on in the morning, it has already counted 600+ calories, despite it not having been on my wrist or switched on. How can I get the watch to start calories at zero?

  • You burn calories to be alive. It's called Base Metabolic Rate. It can be calculated (estimated) with a few essential physical parameters such as sex and weight. If you want to start the day with zero then check the number at midnight. But you are burning calories every minute you are alive.

Your ACTIVE CALORIES will start at zero until you start moving, but your RESTING CALORIES will never stop while you draw breath. Here are my numbers so far today and for the whole of yesterday....

  • Thanks. I understand all of that. My point is that I’m not wearing the watch during the night, nor is it even switched on, so it shouldn’t be measuring anything, resting or active. So you’re saying that the watch is estimating the number of calories burned from time elapsed between midnight and putting the watch on, plus some other elements from my profile. If so, I can see the sense in that, and it’s a more accurate than not counting that time at all.

  • Yes. The watch has a figure for your resting calories in each 24 hour period and will simply apportion them throughout the day whether you wear the watch or not.

For example, let's say your BMR is 2,000 Calories. At midday you would expect the watch to show 1,000 resting calories plus whatever you've accrued through being active up till that point.

If you use the Report feature in Garmin Connect you can see the resting (BMR) calories as a fixed figure for each completed day, unless you change your physical attributes such as weight.

The watch doesn't need to measure them when the watch is worn. It calculates them from known data.

  • When I get up my swim 2 garmin states I burnt 600 calories. When does it restart counting the calories? How do I reset the watch so it starts counting calories from the morning not from whatever time?
