HRM-Dual with watch in or out of range

Hi everyone,

I recently started boxing and want to record my trainings in Garmin Connect. However, I don't want to wear my watch (Fenix 6 Pro) during the training: it could get damaged, my opponent might hurt themselves while hitting it, and it just doesn't fit nicely under/over the glove.

That lead me to considering getting an HRM. According to my use, the HRM-Dual seems to be the best choice. I could not find out, however, if I can nicely record an activity with it while not wearing the watch. In particular, I have two questions:

  1. Will I get weird recordings while not wearing the watch but keeping it in range? My expected answer is no, since all I record is the heart rate, but I might as well ask;
  2. Can I record an activity while the watch is out of range, with only the HRM?

I'm using the cardio activity to record my boxing trainings; this might be relevant.

Thanks for helping me! I'm a beginner with Garmin stuff, and I'd like to be sure before spending another 70 euros on equipment.

    Maybe I'm doing something wrong and manually-added activities should be tracked by the training status and others?

    No, training status is based on heart rate and HRV data, so adding an activity…

    Not quite sure about the safety at boxing in this case either. Since you wear it on the chest, the risk of a serious injury is probably higher than at the watch self. Rather test whether wearing the watch on the ankle may work for you. I do use it in that way frequently. Works well for me. A wrist band extender may be necessary, but that's easy to find, or make an own own from an old strap.

  • I think that in sports in general and in contact sports in particular, you should not wear any jewelry or similar things on your body.
    A body hit and be it only during training and with chest strap I do not want to imagine

  • Hi everyone,

    Thanks for your helpful answers. You are right that it may be unsafe to wear an HRM while boxing, even if I'm only a beginner. The reason why I'm considering this is because adding an activity manually does not seem to influence the training status (and counters such as "weekly intense minutes"). I'm annoyed that a 90-mins, weekly workout would not get tracked without an HRM.

    No, training status is based on heart rate and HRV data, so adding an activity manually will not impact it.

    Try wearing the watch on the ankle, as I suggested

  • Okay, thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I'm doing French Boxing, which involves kicks; wearing it on the ankle is also not an option.
