Spin Class Calories are way off... Any ideas?

I've had my Fenix 6 Pro for over a year now but recently I have had issues with calories not recording correctly. I usually do spin classes 3 or 4 times a week and have done for many years. My average calorie burn for a 50 minute workout has always been 600-800 calories depending on the class.

I am, 49, 5'8 and 184kg and I have never changed my data. I first noticed some issues a few months ago when the odd class would show skewed data and it may show as half the calorie burn you would expect but its happening all of the time at the moment.

I have just completed a really intense 50+ minute workout and my heartrate was consistently in the  red zone at 140 bpm+ with a high of 160bpm yet my calorie burn was 176!

Other exercises such as weight training seem similar to what they always have but even football is not showing as it once did where a 60 minute 5 a side game where I ran 2.5 miles only recording 467 calories when again it would usually be 700-800.

I have noticed Trainer Connecting coming up a few times on my watch mid-exercise even though at the start of the exercise when there was an option I have chose not to use that. There was a time last week where the calorie burn seemed to be working, trainer connected came on during the class and afterwards the calorie count only went up by 20! I'm not sure if this is connected but I am clutching at straws and getting frustrated trying to solve myself.

Has anyone got any ideas on any settings I can change or any way to sort this out?

  • Are your User Profile settings including gender, height, and weight all set correctly? Are you really 184kg or is that a typo?

If the user settings are all correct then the usual next step is to try a factory reset.

  • Definitely a typo. Should be 84 kg. I am half the man I used to be already!

All settings are fine. Male, 49, 5'8 and 84.6kg

  • Have a look at the Resting and Active Calories of the activities. Compare two activities of the same duration. The Resting Calories should be around the same (influenced only by the duration and by your body parameters). And the Active Calories depend on the ratio HR / Resting HR.

So if there is a big discrepancy between an older and a recent activity in Active Calories, then it quite likely means your Resting HR recently significantly increased (perhaps because you did not wear the watch when sleeping). Another possibility is a significantly increased Max HR. For example if you have the auto-detection of Max HR enabled, and the HRM detected an erroneously high HR, then it could lead to wrong Calories calculation too. I recommend turning off the auto-detection, and using it only occasionally for the re-evaluation of your Max HR during max efforts.

  • Hi there,

Did you manage to get it sorted? I seem to have the same problem. I used to burn 600 calories per 45min session and now i am down to 90 calories.

I have not changed my wearing patterns, pretty much take watch off to charge it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • It seemed to correct itself after a full reset and update, Not had any recent issues with it.
