Increased battery consumption with version 24.10 compared to 24.00

Just noticed that my battery consumption is roughly doubled after the 24.10 version was pushed to my Fenix 6X Pro Solar. With 24.00 my average battery usage was ~0.2 % per hour and now with 24.10 its ~0.38% per hour. I'm currently charging the watch so I will restart it after it have been fully charged. Then look if the problem persists or not.

  • Its a simple tool which I have built myself. It grabs and process the information in the Debug\usage_hrly.log file.

  • so i need to connect watch to pc via cable to check directory?

  • Yes, exactly. And you probably need to be a member of the beta program to enable the hourly logging. Or, install secure_config.gcd according to the beta information. Information is found here:

    https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/fenix-6-series/f/announcement/314858/beta-version-23-84

  • Same.  I was getting 4 days battery with 24.00, now down to 3 days with 24.10.  I don't use the watch anymore, just keep checking to see if Garmin will ever fix the issue, but it seems that they don't care and are now making it worse.

  • I'm beginning to wonder whether support for CIQ System 5 was where things started going downhill. That was introduced in firmware 21.00.

As I reported elsewhere, rolling back to 16.70 fixed my battery woes, but I didn't download any apps, widgets, data fields etc.. From there I rolled forward to 23.10 and battery life took a dive, without installing any third party components. Finally I updated again, to 24.00 and battery life was so poor that I could not tolerate it and I rolled back, this time to 19.21.

That seemed to again resolve battery problems, but I discovered that I could not download/install Stryd Zones to this firmware. It needs CIQ System 5 support, thus forcing me to update to at least 21.00. I did install Stryd Zones, but I have not recorded any activities since the last charge on Friday afternoon.

I've set a reminder to check the battery level every 24 hours and it's dropped exactly 8% daily as a smartwatch. So now 21.00 is as bad as 24.00. I did not get as far as installing anything on 24.00 so I don't think Stryd Zones is the problem. I think it's CIQ System 5 support that's battery hungry. Purely a hunch, no hard proof and no technical ability to provide any, but there is a bit of a pattern emerging. I'm just surprised that it didn't manifest itself sooner, like when 21.00 was first released, so maybe my hunch is wrong.

    Any other theories out there?

Factory reset this morning, still on 21.00. No paired sensors. Nothing downloaded. No pulse ox. No activities. No music. No WiFi..Now down 10% in the last 24 hours or 26% in 72 hours AS A SMARTWATCH. It should be down only 15%.

24.10 installed yesterday evening and factory reset. The next day, despite gaining a percent or two while connected to my laptop, down 11% in 24 hours....

  • Battery issues started with 20.50 for me, so prior to the CIQ5 update, if that was 21.00. I did roll back to 20.30 during my testing, but it didn't solve the issue.

It would be nice to have an update from Garmin on where they are with a fix. Last I can find is a post from a few months ago saying "there is a lot of work being done... to track down the cause to final resolve the issue." and "There is no specific software version patterns causing the issue."

  • OK. Thanks. I've just factory reset on 21.00 and I've installed nothing and I've paired nothing except my phone. I've removed unwanted default widgets. No plans to record any activities this week.

Let's see if that fixes anything.

p.s. I'm using the change log spreadsheet here....

to inform my understanding that CIQ System 5 support was introduced with 21.00.

  • Also experiencing extreme battery drain for the 2nd day.  Interestingly i also just added Stryd for the first time.

  • For most of my battery testing, on various firmwares over the last several weeks I have not had Stryd Zones or any other third party (or Garmin) added components installed. The watch has only been used with the native features as supplied out of the box.

I only added Stryd Zones last week, but, other than configuring my run screens I have not recorded any runs or any other activities.
