Battery use: WiFi vs. Bluetooth

Hi. I am new to Fenix 6 PRO. I searched around a bunch about this but have not been able to find the answer.

I definitely need to connect my watch to my Android phone via Bluetooth. That is working fine.

But I saw that you can also connect on Wi-Fi. I have set this up for my home router and the watch reports it has connected fine over Wi-Fi.

My question is - is there an advantage to setting the watch to connect to my home router over Wi-Fi in addition to Bluetooth to my phone?

Is there any function that cannot be done through a Bluetooth connection to my Android phone, or works better (?) over Wi-Fi?

And I think most important! - what is the impact on battery life by having both Bluetooth to my phone and Wi-Fi to my router configured?

Thanks for any assistance. Much appreciated.

  • WiFi does not remain continuously connected so the battery impact should be minimal. If you have auto upload on it will connect to WiFi when in range and upload new activities this way. The biggest advantage there is WiFi is much faster than a Bluetooth sync. You can also manually initiate a WiFi sync which I find is sometimes helpful if the Bluetooth sync is being slow for some reason.

You will need WiFi if you plan to use one of the streaming music services (Spotify, Amazon, etc) since the watch has to connect to WiFi to sync and refresh the music. At least for Spotify this is done automatically when you plug it in to charge or you can manually trigger it. If you aren't going to use music or plan to copy songs you own to the watch (which is done over USB) you don't need to worry about this.
