Garmin TopoActive Africa Map

Hi Team,

I am trying to get my fenix 6 pro update the TopoActive Africa map installed through garmin express, but I keep getting a error message. I have atleast 20GB free space in my watch, so this is not a space issue, I re-installled Garmin Express muliple times. It still doesnt work.

How do I fix this?

  • Hi,

If the file was downloaded on your computer, then you can update it manually, only copy/paste the new files to your watch.

If the new file do not have the same name and/or are less bigger than the original, do not use this suggestion.

---> Do not forbade to backup the replaced files before copy/paste.

You will see the version number under your watch when you select a map under an activity.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the response, but it seems like the maps are not getting downloaded. The download is couple of Gbs, I get the error message within minutes of clicking install

  • I am having a similar problem... But with the TopoActive Africa 2023.0 maps. Every time I try to install the update it would start downloading about... 800mb of the 2.7gb update, and then come back with an Update Failed. MULTIPLE times over multiple months. So this update never comes in.

So I decided to be a bit clever, and its LITERALLY what I am doing this very second.

The Garmin windows app obviously tries to access content on the internet to download the map (IMG) file, but nobody knows the actual location of that file to download and update the map manually. This might be your only choice to get past this problem.

So, I installed WireShark and set it up so that it can monitor all the traffic going in and out of my PC. I started the traffic capturing in WireShark and then clicked Update in Garmin Express so that it starts to download the IMG file. A few seconds is all you need, then you can stop the capturing (and even kill Garmin Express and the download).

One of the lines in the traffic will be a GET (Under the Info column) request that Garmin Express does to literally GET the IMG file from Garmin's servers. When you drill down into the HTTP details of that request... wham... there she is. The URL of the IMG file. And you can easily pop the URL into your download manager app or even just into your browser and the file will download. From there its just a case of copying the new IMG file to your Garmin folder on your watch (and you might need to select it in the watch's map/navigation settings).
