Hiking vs Navigation

Hi everyone. First Garmin device (Fenix 6 Pro) purchased yesterday and loving it but a steep learning curve. Can someone just verify for me:

if I am hiking and I have loaded up the route, I use “Navigate”, “courses”

But if I am hiking on a route that isn’t marked or pre-planned and I want to record it, I use “hiking”?

    You can actually navigate a course within the Hiking activity (actually all outdoor activities).  

    To get to navigation within the Hiking activity:

    1. Select Hike from the Activity list
    2. Press the menu (left middle) button to get into the Hike options menu
    3. Scroll to and select Navigation
    4. Scroll to and select Courses
    5. Select your course
    6. Select Do Course
    7. Takes you back to Hike Activity Data Screen
    8. Start activity recording
    9. Navigation will now be active
