Heart Rate completely inaccurate during Workout- Fenix 6X Pro Solar

Hi all,

Last month I upgraded from a Garmin Venu to a Garmin Fenix 6X PRO Solar. I was impressed by the new features that were available in the Garmin (training recovery, training effect etc) + battery life.

When I got the watch I was just after a cold that kept me 2 weeks without training. I started using Fenix 6X Pro Solar during my CrossFit workouts and immediately noticed that the heart rate measurements were not correct during the workout. Firstly, I blamed my non-training period due to a cold I thought that the readings were fine but I was not going maximum from my side.

Now it has been one month of training and I am convinced that the heart rate measurement are completely inaccurate during the workout.

Example from today (going near to lactose threshold)

WOD:

10 Rounds in 15 min

10 clean& jerk

10 burpees bar faces

Lets see the reading from Fenix 6X Pro Solar

There is no chance of doing this kind of workout and your heart rate staying 125 (just try to do 10 burpees for testing it)

I also tested one day my old watch (Venu) which my wife is wearing and the measurement on the old Venu was pretty accurate according to intensity therefore the problem is the Fenix 6X Pro. Moreover, all the other calculations are useless and inaccurate as well since the majority of them are checking the time you are spending on Zone 4 and Zone 5.

I am very disappointed with the Fenix 6X Pro Solar and it seems that even my kid's 30 $ Xiaomi smartwatch is better at heart rate measurements. I strongly suggest for you do broad research before you upgrade to a Fenix 6X Pro Solar. Maybe it's not worth the money at all.

I see that this has been an issue firstly with Fenix 6 series but it was supposed to be fixed right? I am using the latest software version 23.83. Is somebody else facing the same issue lately during workouts? Any hints on how it can be solved? Does Garmin have a complaint mailbox or form that I can send officially the complaint?

Thank you for taking your time to read this post

  • Fenix is a heavy watch. I also had problems with it. I can still feel sometimes that it moves on my wist. With the less heavy forerunner 245 i did not have these issues.

My solution was to buy a chest strap hr sensor.

  • Thanks for your feedback. At some point, I was thinking the same. Which one do you suggest? Is the Garmin HRM Dual good enough?

  • I got a HRM-SS from a friend (it's an older version of Dual) which is ok. Later i wanted to buy another one for my son and I almost bought a Polar H9 but at the end bought the H10 because of its superior strap (doesn't move when you're sweat) Polar H9 and H10 are considered by many reviews the best (most accurate) and I can only recommend them as well.

BTW I also made a datafield to compare the chest strap and the watch: ANT+ HRM Heart Rate Monitor: apps.garmin.com/.../7c83d402-4b68-4f0a-b167-7139788a19b3

  • Hello, yes, I have had the same issue now on 3 separate Garmin devices (a Fenix 6 Sapphire Pro, which Garmin replaced for me with a Fenix 6S Sapphire, which had the same issue, then was replaced with a second Fenix 6S Sapphire which *also* has the same problem.

I used to have great HR readings on my original Fenix 6 Pro watch up until August, when I noticed the HR reading just wouldn't increase when I was working out. I am usually on the treadmill, so I use the Treadmill activity, and that's where I noticed the watch was displaying an absurdly low HR reading in the middle of my workout. I ended up just using the Cardio activity as that was the only one displaying the right HR, but even that started malfunctioning after a few weeks.

As I said above, I've had that watch replaced, and the replacement watch replaced, because they all have the same issue. I have even tried using activities like Yoga and regular Running whilst running on the treadmill, and I know my HR should be 155-160, the activities always show 88-97 or thereabouts. It is only the Cardio activity that displays the correct HR, but from my experience with the first watch, even that malfunctions down the line.

I have tried all the different kinds of resets, I have moved my watch from one hand to the other, I have sent it in to the local Garmin distributor multiple times (I am not in the US or anywhere in Europe), I have rolled back the software (23.10 to 21.00) and absolutely nothing has worked. I imagine the chorus will jump in to say I should buy an HRM, but for what I've paid for this watch...no, I shouldn't. It was all fine and dandy until one day, it wasn't. And I see lots of reddit posts reporting the same issue so clearly this is a known bug that is not being addressed.

I have refrained from posting here or elsewhere because I was waiting for Garmin to do something about it, but it is clear the local Garmin folks (who in turn rely on Garmin Europe for advice) are unable to help and folks in the US aren't able to address this either. It is very disappointing as the HR reading is what tracks calorie burn, and while we all know it isn't medically accurate, that is the information I need to maintain my weight goals.

  • It sounds crazy. Now that you have the same problem on 3 different devices it's clearly not a hardware issue. On the other hand Garmin has 2 watches where they could probably be able to reproduce the problem, though it's hard to believe they'll ship them to the HQ for that.

  • It really does sound crazy, and the funny thing is, my partner has a 6X and he has no issues with his device (it was one of the very first ever produced, not sure if that makes any difference). I have been trying to sort this out since August and have had absolutely no luck. It is extremely frustrating as I had such an amazing experience with my original Fenix before it started malfunctioning.

  • I don't think IT started mailfunctioning but probably it's a software issue that needs some very special configuration (just throwing ideas: what activity you use, what are it's settings, maybe even what datafields are installed, etc...)

I know it is a big ask, but since you already did that twice since august anyway... can you factory reset the watch, then try it, and see if it happens with no change on it? Just start the activity without changing any configuration or installing any CIQ app. Though just by syncing it with the phone might put the cause of the problem on the watch I guess...

  • Thanks for the suggestion - I have already done that and the issue still persists. The syncing of the phone being the issue...that's an interesting thought. What do you think might be the issue there? I would have assumed it was a one-way transmission thing (the HR being broadcast to the phone via Bluetooth).

  • I don't know, I don't know more than you about how Garmin works, I just happen to be a software developer myself so I try to think loud... Maybe you can try to create a new Garmin account and connect to that and do the minimum setup there (just what's required) and then do the factory reset and connect to that account.
