Fenix 6 series (6s pro) barometer altimeter issue

Hi,

I noticed on my girlfriend's fenix 6s pro the barometer and altimeter numbers are quite unstable and vary over a very wide range especially the altitude:

I have a 6X pro myself and know how those graphs should look like. Was trying different auto settings but it didn't seem to help, if I calibrate then it doesn't take long before altitude and/or pressure jump to a crazy number. Although pressure does seem to stick with more/less atmospheric most of the time. But altitude can show anything between 20k and -20k meters, which I assume is the range limits of the watch.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue? And does it look more likely to be software bug or faulty sensor?

P.S. pressure sensor does seem clean (have taken it out of the watch to check, and port hole wasn't blocked at all)

Thanks,

Vic

  • Yes, my fenix 6s pro started showing -28,000 for altitude. tried to calibrate and that comes up with correct altitude but nothing changes.  Same issue with the fenix 5, that is why I upgraded. watch only a year and a half old.

  • Hello. I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. For altimeter concerns there are a few steps we recommend trying initially.

    • Ensure the watch is on the latest SW version 27.00 using Garmin Express.
    • For cleaning the sensor, you will want to submerge the watch in warm clean water for 15-20 minutes. Rinse the sensor port directly under the faucet. Then shake loose the excess water, and try the calibration again.
    • If there is no change, we recommend completing a factory reset using these steps:
    1. Ensure the watch is powered off.
      • You may need to hold LIGHTfor up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.
    2. Press and hold BACK and START/STOP.
    3. Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these two buttons.
    4. After the first beep release START/STOP.
    5. After the second beep release the remaining button.

If this continues, we recommend contacting Garmin Product Support as the device may need to be replaced.
