Ordnance Survey maps on fenix 6 pro?

Hi

I've recently acquired a fenix 6 pro.  Very happy with it and finding my way around it.  The cherry on the top, however, would be the ability to view / use the Ordnance Survey 1:50k or 1:25k series.  Is this possible?  I have found a video for the fenix 5X (youtu.be/Y_n6LR4HJvQ) which at 7:28 shows that it can handle the 1:50k maps.  However, Garmin's support has advised me that the fenix 6 pro can't do this, with neither the fenix 5X nor the fenix 6 pro showing as being compatible devices on the relevant map purchase page on Garmin's website (in fact no Garmin watches show as being compatible with the maps).

Either this is a disappointing downgrade in capability or Garmin has changed the format of the maps such that the fenix 5X could use them but the fenix 6 pro cannot.  Can anybody clarify either way?

Also am I right in thinking the fenix 6 pro cannot offer map shading of relief?  This is a missing function for use during hillwalking (my main activity).  I also have a Garmin Edge 830 for cycling which can show shading even though it's actually less important for cycling than for hillwalking, arguably.

Many thanks for any pointers.

Ben

  • Many thanks - I'll have a look at that :)

  • Many thanks - I'll need to have a play with that - what detail level did you use?  Can't quite get my head around how the Fenix uses a combination of 'system' (presumably underlying default?) map settings and activity-specific settings to give the overall settings for any activity Thinking  All a bit confusing.

  • The video in your post is one of mine , the discoverer map from Garmin was never meant for the fenix range of watches but worked perfectly on the 5x and 5x plus I had , the map is basically an img file of the original paper map , although it’s not vectorised which means when you zoom in on the map , the image breaks up , I found the maps where if very little use as to see the maps clearly the scale was too large to be of use , I tend to find that by far the best maps for the fenix range are made by talkytoaster, I havnt tried the discoverer maps on the 6X, I’m sure they would work , but they really are of little use compared to the other maps that are available.

  • Hi.  Thanks for coming back on that and makes sense.  My preferred use would be not to 'use' the map to follow as I walked but, as I do at the moment with my old handheld, should I need to set a waypoint (e.g. in poor visibility) and then use the watch to navigate to it.  From your video, it looked like even when zoomed right in on Snowdon that would be possible?  Seems you can still buy that old format file online second hand, but only on an SD card for putting into a handheld - not sure I can still buy it in a format that I could copy onto my Fenix 6 to try out.  So I suspect I'll be heading to talkytoaster's site!
