Running power data wildly high

I have a fenix 6s pro and a HRM pro, using the running power widget i get reading of averaging 400ws on a run othen going over 700 when doing an effort. This seems really really high and Training Peaks agrees giving me wild TSS score.

Is there something i need to do to get it set properly or is the running power and HRMpros power reading just not very good

  • i have nothing to compare it to, but averaging 400w for an easy paced run seems wild, i would be working very very hard on a bike to match that

You can't compare bike power and running power…

Training peaks will give a run a tss score of over 1000 with the running power run enabled, Saturday i did a 20min super easy jog with run power on i got a tss of 243 sunday i ran a 3 hour marathon without the running power widget on and got a tss of 362.

So i am basising it being wildly wrong on the interpretation of the data into another metric.

You can't compare bike power and running power like that.

Your bike FTP and running power 'FTP' will be completely different.

  • no but the numbers seem very very high particularly when that number is then interpreted as training stress by a platform, giving a wild amount.

Looking at reviews of it people are often hitting 400w on an effort, i was getting nearly when barely moving above walking and hitting way way more

Hence asking what others are experiencing with it, what should be standardized zones etc.

They are not - forget the numbers, not important. Think of running power as an effort gauge, nothing more.

My running power FTP is way higher than my cycling FTP with Stryd, and higher again with Garmin Running Power - there is no standard for running power, so you really can't say it 'seems high'

You need to use a platform that separates cycling and running power - once you have set your running power FTP / CP the stress levels will be correct.

But don't get hung up on the numbers

  • Hi. I am having the same issue here. Any ideas how to solve this?

The original post got derailed by the answers provided by others in my opinion.

The main issue is that TrainingPeaks interprets a very easy jog as a very hard session (very high TSS) when using running power as a reference. How do I know it? Because based on power my Inyensity Factor for this session is 1,6, hence very hard. But when I ignore the power by using the rTSS my IF for the same session is 0,7, which is way more accurate. This way I know that my power zones for RUNNING defined by my Garmin watch are useless (cycling power is not relevant here), I only use my Garmin watch (no pod , stryd , etc)

  • I know this is a super old post, but the original poster was correct. When doing MAF runs at 131bpm and a pace of around 12:00 I get power spikes up to 1000 or more. Probably get slammed for saying this, but my Coros and Suunto do not do this. I think it is a bug with the Garmin 7x. I will try with my Stryd pod and Garmin HRM Pro+ and see if that makes a difference. I use HR based TSS in TP because I train with heart rate as a Trail Runner, but if I were to train with power this would be an absolute nightmare.

  • Ran with Garmin HRM and with Stryd separately and both fixed the spikes and made the power seem more reasonable.
