Data screen changes automatically during "rest" step, and does not change back

Hi All,

I'm using a custom workout with several groups (aka sets), each containing a workout step and a rest step, on a Fenix 6X Pro.

When I start this custom workout and I'm in the first set, in the workout step, I'm shown a useful and informative data screen, plus I can of course cycle up/down to see other data screens and customise them. That's great.

When I push the lap button to signify end of that first workout step in a set, and to enter the first rest step, the data screen changes to a very useless and uninformative predefined data screen (which is non-removable and non-editable). It shows contents of the entire custom workout in a very small font, without any dynamic elements, not even showing the rest countdown, not to mention HR or anything else that would be useful.

If I just leave it as is without touching the watch, the watch will be stuck on that useless rest-specific data screen for rest of the entire workout - all remaining sets of other exercises within the same custom workout, all remaining rests, it will just never change back to other useful data screens. I will basically never again see HR, timer, reps, rest countdown, time of day... that is unless I take action and cycle through data screens manually by pressing up or down.

When I do cycle manually through the data screens, I'm again defaulted to that useless rest-specific data screen upon entering the next rest, and stuck there for the remaining sets/rests unless I take action again.

My custom workout contains 36 sets in total, and 36 rests, so to keep the watch on the specific data screen I want to see (both during sets and rests) I need to press "up" at least 36 times during the workout (every time rest step starts). Doesn't sound like much, but it's highly frustrating, as sometimes I'm holding/moving weights or benches during my rest, or hanging from the bar, and just want to glance at the watch even just to check time of day, or timer of the workout, or remaining rest time, and I can't without taking extra action and pressing a button at least once every rest to get back to some other informative and useful data screen.

I have auto switching disabled - that helps to some extent, it would switch out of that silly and useless rest-specific data screen, but it would continue to cycle through all data screens, so depending on where it is in that cycle, I may or may not see the details I want at a glance.

Is there any way to select one specific data screen, whether custom or predefined, for the duration of the entire custom workout, and not have the watch switch to another screen during rest steps, or at the very least switch back to the previous data screen when the rest ends and the next set begins?

Useful initial data screen shown after starting "workout" step of the first set (group), and during that entire step:

Upon entering the first rest step of the first set (group), data screen switches to this, and basically stays on it forever (including during subsequent sets/groups, whatever the steps, workout or rest). Unless action is taken to switch to another screen, which will of course promptly go back to this silly screen next time rest step starts. I wish I could actually remove this data screen completely, as I'll never use it, but that's not possible either.

This is how the custom workout looks like to give an idea of the groups containing the workout and rest steps.

Any help, thoughts, things to try would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg.

  • I shall add that removing the rest steps and only having workout steps, solves the issue, and I'm always seeing the same data screen that I selected, nothing changes even when transitioning between steps, or between sets. Rest steps appear to be the issue.

  • I am having this same problem. If I manually move to a different data screen, it switches back on a rest and never returns. This is basically a useless screen, and definitely not the one I want to be looking at.

  • It's actually 72+ up presses every workout I just realised and tested, as the first "up" scrolls within that workout summary data screen, and only second "up" press moves to the next and useful data screen.

I'm struggling to understand who that rest-specific data screen is even for. If workouts can be downloaded from the app store and if someone's not familiar with a new workout, maybe it's useful to see the whole list of exercises directly on the watch.

But for someone like me who painstakingly enters the custom workout details into the app/watch, and knows the routine, it's the last thing I want to see on the watch, and yet it's the irremovable thing being constantly shoved to the front. Highly questionable UX.

  • Found a partial workaround.

Using step types other than "Rest" for purposes of resting, for example "Other", and setting their duration type to time and whatever rest time you want as value. Data screen then stays on the one that was selected as it flips from "Workout" step, to "Other" step, to another "Workout" and so on, throughout the entire custom workout.

Two problems with that are that the editing of reps/weight is not offered after each "Workout" step, and that "Other" step still requires selection of an exercise, I just chose "Core" and not set any weight. That second problem could also skew the data, if Garmin counts "Core" exercise with no weight specified as an actual exercise that still burned some calories (while it was just a fake step we used to rest).

Anyway, I'm convinced this is a bug, all other step types leave the data screen alone and don't forcibly change it, it's only the "Rest".

  • I have an Epix Gen 2 and it has the same (super annoying) behavior. This definitely feels like a bug. Only happens on "Rest" steps. I need to insert the "Rest" steps so that I can edit reps/weight after each exercise. If you don't add a "Rest" step, you don't get prompted to edit reps/weight, which is also dumb. Another thing I noticed is that for pre-defined workouts, you are also thrown to the screen with the "workout video" at the start of each set... equally annoying. Also strange that this screen does not exist for custom workouts.

  • There is a ticket on this and 2 other issues, while the language issue was address the others remain open.

    Ticket:  << Ref: 23447061K1 >>
    - always forces us back to the exercise list when lap is pressed
    - long translation in the exercise list of the word "reps" pushes the following weight unreadable off-screen in German and maybe other languages (Fixed on Fenix7 / Epix based devices, maybe not Fenix 6)
    - that we always have to scroll up to get the active counter/countdown in list view while it could be a perfectly active counter right in the middle of the screen without scrolling

You can contact support reference the ticket, describe the issue and don't forget to mention your device, as multiple devices have this problem and it's currently in focus for the F7 devices. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

Other open issues with strength training without a ticket:

    Errors with weight logging
    Requirements:

    - own workout with weights set and one bodyweight exercise in the middle
    - count reps turned on (because without reps you are not asked for weight even if "edit weight" is on)
    - edit weight turned on

Bug1: When ignoring the rep counter (because it counted correctly) it will record weight 0 in the activity.

If I enter the "edit reps" screen and go through to the "edit weight" screen it will preselect the weight set in the training to edit or confirm.
Also if "edit weight" is off the pre-planned weight is always recorded in the activity correctly, no matter if reps are adjusted or ignored.

Bug2: If a bodyweight exercise follows a weight exercise it will show the weight of the previous weight exercise instead of 0 as it should be. And it will be 0 in the stored activity if the rep counter is skipped.

If "edit weight" is off in will always record the correct weight preset in the activity no matter if its 0 for bodyweight or a larger value for a weight exercise.

Bug 3: If I have a weight like 22,5 it gets rounded up to 23 if I skip the repcounter.

And do you really want us to be told to hit start after we pressed start to open a menu to press start on "start training" just to confirm this message by pressing start, then opening another menu by pressing start to start the training by pressing start.

That's 5 more times just pressing start after choosing the training by pressing start in Strength activity.

1 time should be enough after the training was chosen.

  • the screen with the "workout video"

You can enable/disable workout videos in strength settings. Never tested myself, though.

  • Yes, thank you. I saw the option but forgot to try it.

I thought I would be cute and try to work around some of this nonsense by copying the "Strength" app and changing the settings and data screens for the particular type of workout I do, but no dice... as soon as you pick a workout, you are forced back into the "Strength" app with its settings. So you can't even create different apps with different data screens for different workout types.
