Issues with speed - Fenix incorrectly detects speed as zero when the actual speed is relatively high (SUP session)

Yesterday I had a SUP session with relatively constant speed (7 - 8.5 kmph with some intervals with higher pace). The session lasts about 60 minutes with no pause. My Fenix 6 "reports" that my speed was every couple of seconds 0 kmph (the length of zero interval was in range 1 - 4 s). The speed profile in app looks like this

Here is the detail view:

According the gps datafield I had good GPS signal (all bars), but it is definitely not area with clear view to all sides. I was using only GPS alone (not with combination with Galileo or Glonass since form my experience Garmin implementation of proccessing mutliple system at once leads to worse results). Anyone having this issues? It is not first time I have such strange behavior.

After more than one year of active use I am still surprised how many issues these watches have..

  • Hi.. Yes still have this issue and I am on f7. I make my own custom sup activity using running as a base. No longer use sup

  • Thanks, I won't be buying that chest strap then.

  • The issue happens with or without the chest strap. Nothing to do with the chest strap for me. It is a bug with the sup activity and pace

  • Did my first paddle (with strap), I got a few stops (but it was just a relaxed round, I really did not pull though) but not every second.

Just a very wobbly line as it is custom for an activity in watersports mode for Garmin.

  • I am having trouble with speed dropping to zero and it seems to be related to more than activity or device. I have the problem with SUP and kayak  and notice that when I walk my bicycle before starting the activity, the speed is zero whereas a number of months ago it would register 1-2 mph as I walked my bike down the driveway.  Paddling, the problem does not seem to be device specific as my paddling partner has  a Forerunner and had the same problem at about the same time.  It seems to occur when my speed drops below 2 mph; it becomes apparent when I hit a strong current or wind gust and my speed drops; the speed will show as zero even though the data fields for distance and time are updating  Reversing my direction and running with the current or wind, there is no "drop off" in the speed.

  • I had the same issue but found it was actually related to the hrm pro - need to turn off auto pace

  • I just contacted Garmin with this same issue on my Instinct Crossover.  During any Kayak or SUP or Boat activity, the speed data field will show '0' anytime the speed drops to below about 2mph.  Garmin advised me that is how those activities are programmed to operate.  Here was most of the response:

"I heard back from the engineering team, it seems that for kayaking specific that there is a 2mph limit where the watch then drops to 0 mph. Similar to how with run at 1mph it switches over to auto pause. At this time they aren't working on adjusting that speed to be lower, but I did let them know that it was requested to record speeds lower than that."

I would encourage anyone else who disagrees with this logic, to let Garmin know.  For now I'll have to go back to bringing a Foretrex or GPSMap device so I can see useful speed data.

  • It's a different issue and maybe making thread about this issue can help to gain attention. I also don't like this logic, since it makes it unusable on whitewater if you prefer playful run and not only straightforward flow with the current. It also complicates interval training on flat water. From my point of view kayak activity has a long way to go to be fully usable (add stroke counter, separate white water and flat water, ...).
