Please Garmin, add warm up+cool down off the track in track run!

I find very annoying that the track run sport profile doesn't allow to make warm up and cool down in a simply and straight way.

According to Garmin:

"When performing a warm up and cool down before and after your track workout, there are three ways this can be done:

  1. Start the Track Run profile, and perform the Warm Up, Workout, and Cool Down, all on the track and in the same lane.
  2. Start an activity with the Run activity profile and warm up off the track. Save that activity, then start a 2nd activity using the Track Run activity profile. Complete your track workout and save it. Then, to cool down, start a 3rd activity using the Run activity profile and cool down off the track.
  3. If you have a multisport watch, create a multisport profile with Run, Track Run, and Run as the sports. This way, you can use the back button to transition between the 3 sports, but be aware, this will not allow you to perform any custom workouts or intervals using this method."

I dont want to have multiple activity for a simple run neither to have a multisport activity: and obviously I want to be able to use intervals!

Is that so difficult to add this option, and setting a workout which includes "off track warm up"?

Does someone has tried to use trak run profile off the track?does it affects the track calibration??

  • The track mode was really cool at first.  Just perfect ovals- looked great.  But yeah- I often warmup/cooldown outside of the track, or use the outside lanes.  And then- during my workouts- I often shift lanes (to go around people, or puddles).  In the end- I now just use normal run mode.  It still comes out to be within a few feet of accurate for 200's, 400's, 800's.  I kinda' think the whole mode is a bit of a waste and they only did it to match features with Coros.

  • What annoying me its the lap option, when Im running on 200m  track,  gps showing diffrent distance after a couple of rounds, so Im using lap button, but when I have in garmin warm up then run and cool down I cant use lap button cause from warm up changing on run, could You change in software that during programmed running when Im press lap button it catch a lap and a diffrent button will be during a run change a cycle from warm up to run (if I wanna short a warm up and start run not waits to the end of warm up) I hope so U know what I mean.

  • In my experience, the track mode is great: perfect ovals, perfect laps, perfect distance estimation.

Using normal run mode, i usually see from 2 to 5% distance error (over estimates up 50 meters over 1k). Of course this impacts lap pace and total distance: ok, that's nothing to really go crazy about, but it's a pity since we have a profile that makes all almost perfect.

  • You can change the lane setting in the middle of a Track Run activity. It works fine. On the local community center track I usually warm up in lane 3, then move to lane 1 or 2.

  • I never did track run but maybe you could try multisport activity. Setup a hot key for multisport then start a Run (for warmup) then switch to TrackRun for workout and then switch tu Run for cool down. You should have all in one Multisport activity.
But a part from that yeah Track Run should have native some cool-down warm up.

  • That's the suggestion #3 by Garmin (see my original message), but using this way it won't be possible to use intervals.

Furthermore, your single running session counts as 3 different runs for Garmin connect statistics (if you are interested in).

  • true, i'm sorry i read to fast. And yeah for custom workouts multisport is useless indeed.

  • I recently bought a new Forerunner and looked forward for the track option. However, we do our warming up and cool down in the park... A pity that this makes this mode useless. Multisport is no option, since I create a workout for the whole training. And I dont like three activities in Connect and Strava for each training. If someone has a working alternative, that would be great.

  • I got to the conclusion that the best solution in simply using track run profile. In the warm up in the park it is not precise and the watch tries to "force" your position to the track. But Since it is the warm up I don't care, and then when you go back to the track for the intervals it is very precise.
