MTB Incident Detection

Garmin in their wisdom have disabled the 'incident detection' feature when the activity is 'MTB'. Apparently this is that there were too many false alerts.

In all my mountain biking I have only ever set it off once, when I crashed, and as I was ok I cancelled the alert. It was reassuring to know though that if I had been knocked unconscious that an alert would have been sent (although you shouldn't rely on this).

If others are setting off the alert frequently due to lots of jump activities, either they can put up with cancelling the alerts (they don't inconvenience the emergency services), or disable the function on their watches. Instead Garmin have just disabled it for all mountain bikers.

I contacted Garmin. They said sorry, but tough, but that they may, or may not reconsider if they were contacted by enough people. Hence it would be great if people could contact Andy at [email protected]

Thanks

Mac

  • I wish they would allow ANGI as a connected sensor to use for incident detection.  And the alert would go to your watch/device to disable.  I also hope I never have to test the feature.

  • Same here.

I truly do not understand this decision.

Just give a warning. Or even an longer cancel period.

MTB is the one that's most in need of the incident detection of all the available sports.

I'll also send an email to support

  • Yes I've had lengthy discussion with Garmin support about this last year.   I agree.

  • There is a simple fix for this.  First, detect the impact, then check if the GPS location stays in the same place for a minute.  If there's an impact, but the person is still moving down the trail, disregard it.  If the person stops after the impact and they don't cancel it, send the alert.  Come-on Garmin...  This isn't that hard.  Please fix this.  For mountain bikers, it's essential to have this safety feature.

  • I've seen this activity app, but didn't think it would be a good Idea to activate it.    Maybe that's a good thing IMO.  I've had my share of nasty wrecks and 90% of the time I've walked/limped away.  Like some said, I would've have set the bloody thing off everyday from just hard landings.. and trees.  If I go to a trail that's a bit sketch, I'm not riding alone.

I was an Engineering Tec at F>>D.  When we worked alone, I had to wear a fall monitor, which went off doing my job.... crawling in and out of test vehicles.  It really annoyed security, but they said they wouldn't adjust the sensitivity or cancel time.... Liability!  So I'm assuming Garmin is the same way.

    Catch-22

  • Seriously, is that the justification? If someone doesn't want to be bothered, they can turn it off. But for those who want to be sure that if something goes wrong they can automatically alert someone, they need to have that option. When I bought the watch, it had that functionality and I want to use that functionality, regardless of the fact that almost 100% of the time they are false alarms.

  • Hello.

This is the email i've got from the Garmin Supporte

    Hello XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.  I will be more than happy to assist you with your inquiry.  There are some Activity Profiles that will not have the Incident Detection Assigned and one of those is the MTB - it has never had it assigned due to the constant bumping and rough riding.  On the Garmin Watches, here are ones that the Incident detection is turned on by default.  I have singled it out below but you can review this link on Setting Up Incident Detection on a Garmin Device .  I am sorry for any inconvenience but MTB was never an option for the Incident Detection you could toggle it on, but it would not have responded.

Due to the extremely high impact for MTB, incident detection on MTB was never an option. The change that took place is that the watch warn users that when entering that particular feature when Incident Detection is turned on, it is warning  that  the "Incident Detection" is "NOT" Supported where as before you got no warning and would have assumed.  You get a message now (with the change) that "Incident Detection Unsupported".

More than like is that when you turned it on back then, it was in fact not working but you would not have known.  Now that the change has been made and it alerts you, you are now more aware that it is non supportive.

  • MTB is an activity that 100% needs incident detection. It’s absolutely absurd that it has been disabled or not patched at this point. Let’s get the engineers and product owners at Garmin to work on this one with a release date by October? Thanks

  • I set my off accidentally tonight mountain biking, but I had activity set to "bike" rather than "Mountain Biking". So, for anyone who still wants to use this feature for MTB, set activity as "bike" and customise for mountain biking as far as stats/settings go.
