Fenix 6 Pro and Forerunner 255 - gps gains marginal

I got a Forerunner 255 recently and am quite impressed.

Strangely the area I expected to see an improvement on - GPS I honestly find it hard to see a difference! if I squint I could maybe see some 255 improvements (less tendancy to offset to the left) but its quite marginal. I briefly had an Epix 2 for just under 2 weeks (UK return window) and felt simllarly. Its not a game changer and will not 'fix' things for people with unrealistic expectations for consumer GPS.

I use GPS + Gallileo on my F6 and All systems + multiband on the 255

Instant pace on the 255 seems less choppy when running with fewer wild swings but still needs averaging to smooth things out. But it feels better. Maybe not Polar v800 good, but OK.

Mile lap alerts for running and 5 mile alerts for cycling occur almost simultaneously - within a second or two.

Distance recorded has been no more than 0.03 miles (45 meters) apart for bike rides and 0.02 miles (30 meters) apart over a run around 9 miles long. 255 has recorded longer in all cases so far. I haven't tried All systems without multiband yet on the 255.

Anyway I have no idea if the interesting or useful but just some morning musings while I have my coffee!

Should note the 255 was worn on my right wrist during activities,  just both on left to photograph.

  • That looks like the forerunner 955 solar......

  • I've not seen a 955 Solar...but definitely no solar on the 255.

The 255 has more dead space between bezel and screen than I expected which might be throwing you

  • Ahh the circle during paused activity thru me off lol

  • I got thrown when I opened the box! It seems massive compared to the 245 from.what I remember.

I thought they put a 955 in the wrong box!

  • Today I did an interval session (hill repeats)

Final distance matched identically. I used a Polar Verity Sense for the F6, 255 used built in wrist HR (which seems to work well, and doesn't cadence lock)

    At 2 miles F6 showed 2.00, 255 showed 2.01

    At 4 miles F6 showed 4.00, 255 showed 3.99 (then while observing 4.00 / 4.00, 4.01, 4.00)

A lot of elevation change (10x repeats) up and down a narrow single track country lane with 8 foot walls (in places) and varied tree cover

This spot I passed 20 times, 10 times up, 10 times down - the stone wall on the left is about 8 feet high

  • This confirms my impression that someone once with too high expectations (or older versions) denounced the GPS accuracy of the Fenix 6 series and that now runs through many forums.

I go regularly with friends, one of which has a Suunto watch and the other tracks with iPhone (Hiking). We upload our trips to different systems and I always find that my Fenix 6 Pro tracks look the most realistic....

Of course, I've had worse days in difficult conditions, but on the whole, I can't understand the criticism many people have of GPS accuracy.

  • This morning I did another run and having lived with both watches for 9 days am still seeing very marginal differences for GPS. I'm surprised in all honesty.

I used 3 watches today - the black Fenix 6 Pro was paired to a calibrated Styrd on my right foot (Pace from Stryd, Distance from Stryd, track calibrated to 102.1 factor). There is so little in it! At 4 miles all watches reported the mile alert within 0.01 miles (15 meters) of each other.

The Sapphire Titanium 6 (not paired to Stryd) and the 6 Pro paired to Stryd measured identically, the 255 was 0.02 miles (30 meters longer overall) - all well within 1% margins.
