Fenix 6 Series - 20.87 Public Beta

Hello Fenix 6 customers,

Our next beta version for the Fenix 6 series is now available!

Please email the Garmin Outdoor Quality Team if you find issues in software after installing this update: [email protected]

If you’ve participated in the Fenix 6 Beta Program previously, you’ll notice a few changes from how we have managed this in the past. And further down the line, we’ll have some additional improvements to the Beta Program (more on that later!) Notably, this forum post is now the primary resource for reading the change log notes – they are not available on another webpage. (There will be more options for viewing change logs after we implement the additional improvements to our beta program.)

The links to download the software update are listed below. Select the link specific to your watch model. Please note that your computer will download a .zip file when you open this link. This zip contains the software update, as well as a folder with the file necessary for backdating software, and instructions for this process if you choose to do so. Remember, backdating software will reset all settings.

Use these links to download the zip for your watch to update to version 20.87:

  • Welcome to the fake nap club!

My HR is very low today and dipping down in the low 40s again - I think this will trigger a fake nap, if it's true to form.

Although watch isn't showing me as 'sleeping...' yet

  • Just checked and it's the same my max heart on the watch and GC. But true my settings was deleted with this update. So it's newly calculated and I'm always using HRM PRO strap.

  • The Training Effect Label is more complicated than just match the Aerobic/Anaerobic scores and Load. There is a document somewhere which describes them a little bit more in depth.

  • I don't think it can be THAT much more complicated - if I do a Garmin Suggested Workout then it gives an expected TL and Training Effect and the correlation seems close.

I have absolutely no idea what a Stairmaster activity is though, so maybe its super intense vs. running or cycling which which might explain it?

Anyhow the HR was just an idea, if MaxHR is wrong many other metrics are.

  • Shamelessly replying to myself..as expected the dip I spoke about an hour or two ago triggered another fake nap.

Last nights sleep before it was overwritten...as validated by Coros Pace 2

    and the as-predicted fake nap

    ..correlating to the HR dip

  • It's interesting to see how the Coros HR looks to have less resolution and a couple of not very likely spikes during sleep recorded as light, but still quite in agreement with the Garmin sleep (though detecting more awake spots, unsure if that's real of course).

    Curiosity:

I get that there are no fake naps in the Coros tracking, however... if you take a genuine nap (in case this happens of course...) does it detect it?

  • I really very rarely sleep during the day but I think about the only time I genuinely have this year Coros didn't detect it (neither did Garmin!)

I don't really pay any attention to how sleep is broken down - its impossible for me to validate any of it one way or another. I did wake up around 3PM and make a cup of teas which both detected fine.

The Coros HR sensor works well for me - its good enough even for running with no cadence locks with the average and highs being within 2BPM of my HrmPro and only outdoor bike riding seems to throw it off, so my feeling is if it works during activity it should work during a resting / sleep state. i think it only runs every 15 minutes overnight.

  • If you look at some of my statistics here you will see that I can get both Anaerobic and Aerobic score in my "Base" runs. But if the majority of the time is in HR Zone 2 you have high chances to that it will be tagged as "Base". But, its not always true because fast intervals etc etc can change the Training Effect Label.

  • i think it only runs every 15 minutes overnight

Ok so possibly Coros sleep detection is more based on movement rather then hr (or at least the latter has a lower weight), like the old fashioned activity trackers from time back...

  • I have had some really bad sleep nights this last week. And I seems to have a similar problem like you. The watch registers a much better sleep compared how it was. Long wake times doesn't show up in the statistics. But my watch doesn't register false sleeps during day time.

Just received this update through Garmin Express. Probably not related but I will install it anyways.
