Fenix 6 Series - 20.86 Public Beta

Hello Fenix 6 customers,

Our next beta version for the Fenix 6 series is now available!

Please email the Garmin Outdoor Quality Team if you find issues in software after installing this update: [email protected]

If you’ve participated in the Fenix 6 Beta Program previously, you’ll notice a few changes from how we have managed this in the past. And further down the line, we’ll have some additional improvements to the Beta Program (more on that later!) Notably, this forum post is now the primary resource for reading the change log notes – they are not available on another webpage. (There will be more options for viewing change logs after we implement the additional improvements to our beta program.)

The links to download the software update are listed below. Select the link specific to your watch model. Please note that your computer will download a .zip file when you open this link. This zip contains the software update, as well as a folder with the file necessary for backdating software, and instructions for this process if you choose to do so. Remember, backdating software will reset all settings.

Use these links to download the zip for your watch to update to version 20.86:

Change Log for version 20.86 (changes since 20.85):

  • Added prompt to reboot if GPS is unresponsive.

  • Updated name of the Endurance Horseback activity to be Horseback.
  • Fixed Run/Walk detection algorithm to properly calculate running & walking times.
  • Fixed an intermittent issue where the device would report inaccurate activity distance data.
  • Fixed intermittent shutdowns that would occur in the Strength activity.

Instructions for updating software:

  1. Download the .zip specific to your computer, using the links above.
  2. Connect the watch to your computer.
  3. Copy the included gupdate.gcd file (from the System_x.xx folder) to the Primary\Garmin folder on your watch.
  4. If there is a Sensor Hub_v*** folder, place the gupXXXX.gcd file into the \GARMIN\REMOTESW folder of the device. Please note, not all Beta releases will include an update.
  5. If there is a ANT_BT_BLE_v*** folder, place the gupXXXX.gcd file into the \GARMIN\REMOTESW folder of the device. Please note, not all Beta releases will include an update.
  6. Disconnect the watch from the computer and it will prompt you to update software.

After updating, your watch will be running the following software versions. These can be confirmed on the Menu – System – About pages. New versions are indicated in red.

  • Yes, that looks correct. It has been intermittent for me, a few times it have worked as it should and a few times it hasnt. Im thinking that the device might show the last known Training Effect if there is some kind of problem with calculating the current. But, im not sure.

  • In 19.75 (November) and 20.51 it was 6.11.0.2-ETE-garmin-f1265370.

  • Thanks - so we can probably reasonably guess this ETE module / dll or whatever is likely to do HR or data analysis for sleep tracking.

So next firmware it will interesting to see if / when this changes and if we see better or worse results.

  • Adding more sports profiles in recent betas and public software versions, means there are less activity profiles that can be copied... the copying activities option is being systematically reduced, almost redundant.

I copied 11 activity profiles before all these new added profiles,(we can only make copies of about 2 or 3 now) so I have no new added profiles like HIIT and pickle ball etc, because I copied the profiles before updating...

We need the option to remove these new profiles permanently from the watch, so we can copy activities again.

  • We need the option to remove these new profiles permanently from the watch, so we can copy activities again.

    +1

    Absolutely ridiculous limitation.

  • Yes adding these profiles( 90% I'd never use) is actually taking  away a feature that is very useful... Adding new profiles is only an addition if we can still copy activities and actually delete the ones we don't use...otherwise its just a trade off of features... and Garmin haven't announced to us that they are taking this feature away... So I hope its an oversight that will be resolved with enough reports.

  • It is impossible for Garmin to implement each and every sports profile everyone wants (judging from the number of times I've seen requests for new sports on these forums), so it is only logical to allow users to create all the custom sports profiles they need. And let users delete the ones they will never use.

In the FitSDK there are some 50 sports types defined, and 60+ sub-sports in 20+ categories (for example some of the sub-sports for category cycling are: spin, recumbent, downhill). More and more sport/sub-sport combinations are being implemented, so eventually we might even have Ice Skating after scrolling for ten minutes, but still no Nordic Walking. So the ability to copy+edit custom sports will always be a thing anyway.

  • It's same happened to me today on stairmaster. After saving the activity the watch reported Anaerobic which was odd and then saving in GC was Aerobic which was accurate. On the watch the Training Effect also changed thereafter to Aerobic. First time happened though.

  • Yep, this is strange. Was your last (before this) training activity tagged as "Anaerobic" perhaps? Maybe it shows "last known" training effect if the device gets in trouble with calculating the new one.

  • Yes, it was. I always do strength training and thereafter cardio. Tomorrow I'll pay attention to it but I never seen that before.
