Can anyone tell me what the VSPD stands for, it’s on the climbing section of the back country ski touring activity. It’s opposite the distance tracking on the right hand side of the face while in climbing mode.

Backcountry ski app????? Did you mean XC Ski App and if so Build in Garmin one or custom one from Connect IQ store??
backcountry activity
Eeeerm which watch???? as my Fenix5x doesn't have it so am pretty sure NO fenix5 will. And I could not find anything by that name in the market!!!
But there is an app/activity by that name on the Fenix 6... So you may be in the wrong forum. ;-)
thanks moved to fenix 6
No problem....
I've never used this particular app, but just taking a guess at the meaning of VSPD, I'd say it stands for "vertical speed"; the speed of your ascent or descent in feet or meters of elevation per minute.
That's what it would mean in other contexts anyway.
VSPD stands for vertical speed.
The original Garmin datafield VSPD is not very responsive.
Thats why I developed my own custom Datafield: VSPD Vertical Speed which calculate the vertical speed an barometric pressure.
Beside the vertical speed it provides you statistics and also graphs!
VSPD Vertical Speed is available for download in the Garmin Connect IQ Store an is free
Please note that it is still in development. So if you have problems contact the developer. If you like it write a positive review.
VSPD is based on the Barometric Sensor. The altitude of the GPS has proven to be unreliable in the mountains. The problem is that the barometric sensor has a lot of noise. When smoothing you lose the reaction time. That's probably the reason why Garmin Vertical Speed only shows 50m/h (which is too inaccurate for my use in training.
VSPD is configurable. Check out the settings.
Check it out and let me know what you experience.
By the way, Garmin's presentation of the count also has flaws. Negative values are not always colored correctly. Blame Garmin for that not me.
