Fenix 6 - Wireless earbuds that work - Let's settle this

Hello all,

After hours of scouring this forum and Reddit, I'm actually confused about the compatibility and usability of wireless headphones with Fenix 6 series. Some posts mention that a set of earbuds works wonderfully while some posts mention that the same pair has issues with connectivity. I found a compatibility table created by the community as well as a post from Gramin about compatible devices. However, looks like these are 2 years old and are not updated to match the new Firmware updates (for both the buds and the watch). I am having a hard time figuring out the earbuds that actually work, specifically on Fenix 6s Sapphire (although I'm assuming that the compatibility applies equally to all Fenix 6 series watches).

I think after paying more than $600 for a performance watch and more than $100 on earbuds that are designed with the same Bluetooth standards and marketed to play music, it is absolutely reasonable to want to not go through this much pain and suffering just to find a pair. Since neither Garmin, nor the earbuds manufacturers have addressed the connectivity issue (e.g. Jaybird Vista 2's connectivity with Garmin watches, Jabra's insistence that they are "not designed" for smartwatches), I would love to see this community's recommendations based on experience.

The criteria are reasonable and basic. I think in 2022, these are not too much of an ask, given that there are many wireless earbuds in the market that surpass these criteria. All I'm looking for is a pair that works reasonably (I have the latest non-beta firmware, I think 20.00):

1. No drops even when the watch is worn on the left hand, outside.
2. No stuttering even when the watch is worn on the left hand and even when walking outside (not just running - seems like, for some buds, the straightened hand during walking increases the distance between the buds and the watch leading to poor connectivity).
3. Decent sound (this excludes Aftershokz as I'm looking for good bass for electronic/psytrance/ambient music - not just podcasts).
4. Decent quality - we can at least expect buds to last a year.
5. Comfortable and snug for trail runs, road runs, any runs!
6. Sweatproof.
7. Preferably with ANC.
8. At least a few hours of battery life.
9. Preferably detached earpieces.
10. Preferably no over-the-ear attachments so that they can be worn comfortably with sunglasses. Wing attachments are fine.

Please mention the Firmware you have, as well as the model for the earbuds. Thank you again for helping me and other folks!

If we have enough data points, I'll create a compatibility table here for Fenix 6 series!

  • I just dont get it. my trusty old reliable TomTom doesnt have any problems pairing with stuff. Seems like such basic functionality youd want from a sports watch! Rather than adding a bunch of useless features that are of no use to anyone (ski maps for example) it would be really nice if they could get the basic s right.

Having said that, Ive just got back from my first run with my Garmin. It was really good overall. The battery was 100% - and after an hour was down to 85%. Would you say thats about normal for battery?

Im going to customise the various screens etc to suit my needs. But not being able to pair it with any bluetooth headphones is a real let down and - unless I cna get it working somehow - Ill have to take it back and get a sports watch that is able to bluetooth.

  • I made this post and after scouring the interwebs and combing through the forums, I landed on Jabra Elite 7 Active. I also have the Jabra Elite 7 Pro (for my partner). They both work. They do not drop (running or walking) and are rock solid. I wear Fenix 6s on my left wrist. My partner wears on her right. IMO they sound better than Air Pod Pros. They have better bass response. They are more water proof. The pass-through functions work. The mic is great if you are using them with your cellphone. The ANC may not be as good as Air Pod Pros but they work for me.

    Three things to consider:

    1. They do not auto connect. There may be a setting for that, but I haven't looked into it. But I don't mind using the Fenix Menu to connect the headphones manually. I actually prefer not to auto connect. (They are paired. They just don't auto connect, when you take them out of the case and put it in your ears.)

    2. It's important to make sure you have the latest firmware update for both Fenix and Jabra. I did that and haven't run into issues.

    3. If you have paired them with other devices, I think it keeps the watch as the lowest priority. So, turn off bluetooth on other paired devices if you carry them with you, otherwise, once the headphones connect to other devices, you won't be able to connect to the watch until you disconnect the device fully.

  • Thanks , I appreciate it. This is helpful. Slight smile I will try the Jabra Elite 7 Active .

  • Hi, what did you finally buy? Do you have problems with Jabra when doing interval training? I found that issue in another forum so I'm curious if this is fixed or not.

  • JBL Reflect FLOW PRO.

Working like a charm, no disconnection or changes.

    Just Perfect

  • Fenix 6 pro.

I had mixed response with my Sony WF-1000XM3.  Some runs they stuttered like crazy, I tried lots of things that I read on online forums. I concluded that the fact that each earbud maintains its own BT connection was too much for the processor combined with the GPS.

I switched to the Shokz Open Run Pro. Amazing. Never a stutter. Smooth as butter and I can run with earbuds, GPS tracking, and an ANT+ HR monitor. Not to mention that I find bone conducting headphones to be a game changer for me. I love having fully exposed ears and tapping a REAL BUTTON (not  touch sensor) to immediately pause. They work great. Obviously not the same sound quality as full headphones or my Sony's, but fine enough for my needs.

    Highly recommended.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless. Most up-to-date firmware for Fenix 6 pro as of yesterday (17/5/24). Works without stutter or drops with watch on the left wrist.
