Recording triathlon run from swim exit to transition?

How do you all record Triathlon activities when the course has a long run from the swim exit to the timing mat at the transition area? Do you just record the whole thing from the swim start until entering transition as an Open Water activity? Or do you insert an extra Run activity between Open Water and Bike? Or do you press the Lap button to switch to the Transition activity as soon as you exit the water, before crossing the timing mat?

The sprint race I did yesterday had a run from the swim exit to transition that was almost as long as the swim itself. Since I can run a lot faster than I can swim I guess that's going to make my Open Water swim stats look artificially fast.

  • I just switch to transition once I exit the water. Most races I've done that have a longer distance between the swim exit and transition will have a timing mat at the swim exit and will start your T1 time there. Even for those that don't I'd rather have reasonably accurate swim stats and have my swim and T1 not match the official time vs have skewed stats and have the times match.

  • Ha. I had a sprint tri a few weeks ago where the transition from swim to bike was not only long, but the route took so many twists and turns through the dunes and coastal scrub that I felt I nearly needed to engage the mapping on my watch just to find where I had left the bike. Grinning

I normally just press the lap button as I exit the water, and leave it at that.

But if you were really trying to compare the efficiency of your transition (ie. getting out of your wetsuit, putting your helmet on, etc) between one tri and another, and excluding the distance from the swim exit to T1 from the comparison, you could create a custom multisport activity that went Swim> Run> Bike> Run. Note that if you include this extra run, you will probably have to press the lap button to twice to skip the automatically inserted transition after the swim exit.
